General Music
Grade Level: 9th thru 12th 
Credit: 1 (full-year)
General Music is a multi-cultural study of the role and importance of music in our daily lives.  Critical listening skills are developed as past, present, and future trends are studied and analyzed.

Chorus I - Freshman                                         
Grade Level: 9th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Recommend completion of feeder-school system    vocal music program or recommendation from voice teacher
Freshman Choir is a performance-oriented class for those ninth grade students with experience and/or special interest in vocal music.  Both contemporary and classical styles of choral literature are studied with an emphasis on fundamental development.

Chorus II - General
Grade Level:  9th thru 12th  
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Chorus is a developmental, performance-oriented course of study.  Students learn fundamentals of vocal tone production and breathing through study, exercises and related appropriate choral literature.  This literature, which may be sacred or secular, represents a variety of styles and periods.

Chorus III - Concert Choir
Grade Level:  10th thru 12th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful audition or recommendation from chorus or voice instructor
Concert Choir is a performance-oriented class for those students with experience and/or special interests in vocal music.  Both contemporary and classical styles of choral literature are studied with an emphasis on the proper fundamentals of singing.  Freshmen may audition with teacher recommendation during the first 4 days of school.

Chorus IV - Women’s Chorale
Grade Level:  10th thru 12th
Credit:   1 (full-year)
Successful audition or recommendation from

Music Theory Advanced Placement
Grade Level:  11th or 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Choral or Band teacher recommendation
Music Theory is designed for the music student who is interested in pursuing a career in music and/or majoring in music.  Beginning with a review of the fundamentals of musical notation, the course will include the study of music vocabulary, chord structure, key signatures, harmony, complex rhythms and other music reading skills in preparation for college music theory.  This music theory course will also emphasize the student’s development in the areas of sight singing & ear training.  Students will be learning skills that are taught at a college freshman level of music theory.  

 

Band I - Freshman    
Grade Level: 9th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Completion of feeder-school’s Instrumental music program or recommendation of band director
Freshman Band is a performance-oriented class in which technical skills are expanded and fine-tuned.  The class is co-curricular, involving rehearsals and performances outside the school day.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Freshman Band members.

Band II - Concert     
Grade Level: 10th, 11th, and 12th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Freshman Band, or the recommendation of the high school director
Concert Band is a performance-oriented class in which concert music is rehearsed throughout the year with an emphasis on the development of proper individual musicianship.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Concert Band members.

Band III - Symphonic                                         
Grade Level:  10th, 11th, and 12th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful audition or upon recommendation  of  Band director
Symphonic Band is an advanced, performance-oriented class in which concert music is rehearsed throughout the year.  Students are engaged in an intensive study of ensemble musicianship and participate in an expanded performance schedule, including Fall preparation for mid-state clinic band auditions and spring preparation for solo and ensemble festival.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Symphonic Band members.

Band IV – Percussion
Grade Level:  9th – 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of middle-school band or recommendation of high school director.
Percussion Class is a performance oriented class, addressing the fundamental development of percussion techniques.  The instructional focus is physical skill development, leading to improved reading skills and improved overall musicianship.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Percussion Class participants.

 Orchestra  – String Ensemble
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Recommend completion of feeder-school’s instrumental strings program or recommendation of the high school orchestra director
Strings development curriculum is coordinated with the National Standards for Music Education and with the Tennessee State Requirements for Instrumental Music Education.  The class is a developmental performance class.    The band, choral, and orchestra directors will select brass, woodwind, percussion, and vocal students to participate in a full orchestra as needed.
