WCS EDUCATOR AMONG FINALISTS
FOR PRINCIPAL OF YEAR

Scales Elementary Principal Rick West

Scales Elementary School Principal Rick West is among several finalists for the 2009-2010 Tennessee Principal of the Year award.  The Department of Education gives the award each year to a school leader who has made considerable contributions to school improvement.

West began his career teaching ninth grade social studies in Alabama.  After moving to Nashville to pursue his Masters degree in Administration, West was hired to teach at Brentwood High School.  His first job as an administrator came as an assistant principal at Heritage Middle School.  West also worked at Kenrose and Crockett elementary schools before being named principal at Scales in 2004.

As he prepares to begin his sixth year as principal at Scales, West says he's reminded of why he chose this profession in the first place.  "My staff and I get the chance to shape and mold the future for these students," says West.  "And I am rewarded many times over with the children's warm smiles and friendly hugs and with words of appreciation from their parents."

West is among nine other principals from across the state to be named finalists for Tennessee Principal of the Year.  The winner is expected to be announced next month, and while he's honored to be a finalist for such a prestigious award West says he's fortunate to be surrounded by such a great group of people.

"I pour myself into my work and strive to make Scales the absolute best elementary school in the state," says West.  "I am blessed to have the best staff in town and appreciate all of the support and dedication from our parents and community members."
