PLAYFUL PUMPKINS ON
DISPLAY AT OAK VIEW

Callie and Macy Eubanks show off the pumpkin they made based on the book The Little Scarecrow Boy.

Just in time for Halloween, the boys and girls at Oak View Elementary School have finished dressing up their pumpkins for an annual event.  The Pumpkin Character Creating Contest is a favorite among students at Oak View.

The contest calls on children in grades two through five to think of a favorite storybook character.  Then, they must find a pumpkin, squash or gourd to use for the character.  Using materials like paint, feathers, glue and glitter, the students try their best to create a masterpiece.

For four days, the pumpkins are proudly put on display in the school library for all to admire.

"It's fun seeing the kids be creative with something they've read about," says Oak View Media Specialist Amanda Eubanks.  "It's also good to see the kids become interested in characters they're unfamiliar with and then want to read those books."

Some of the more popular characters this year include Horton from Horton Hears a Who, Wilbur from Charlotte's Webb and Laura Ingalls Wilder from the Little House series.
