AMERICAN HEART MONTH

Article written by Ken Brooks, Williamson County Schools Health/Wellness Specialist

February is American Heart Month and Williamson County Schools is urging women to join the fight against heart disease.  Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women, killing one out of every four.  Fortunately, making small changes in your lifestyle can significantly reduce your risk for developing heart disease.  A diet that includes less saturated fat, more fruits and vegetables and a life that includes consistent exercise helps tremendously.

Awareness is being created within Williamson County Schools.  On February 1, the Central Office celebrated National Wear Red Day.  Employees were provided with informational brochures, as well as some heart healthy foods.

Brentwood High School has declared February 14 as “Go Red!” Day.  Activities on this day include:

  • Facts and information about living a healthy lifestyle.

  • Students and teachers will tape a public service announcement to promote heart health.

  • Healthy Food Samples available at lunch.

  • “Go Red Walk” during lunch around the building.

Winstead Elementary is also getting in on the action.  Winstead will host a HeART show Friday, February 22 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  The night’s activities include a heart obstacle course in the gym.  They also plan to have heart related health fair booths for people to receive free information, advice and assessments.

Contact the Coordinated School Health office if you are involved in a Heart Healthy activity this month.  You can also contact your local American Heart Association to receive free information and what you can do to “Go Red!” this month.
