WCS ACTIVITY CONTEST

WXW Participants walk the trail at Bowie Nature Park on February 7.

IN FOCUS previously reported details about “Walk Across Williamson” which is now underway.  As a partner with this event, Coordinated School Health is sponsoring an activity contest where participants can earn grants for their schools.

Fifteen schools have created activity groups and signed up for this contest.  The group that records the most minutes of activity during the months of February and March will win a $1,000 grant for their school, which will be be spent in the areas of physical education and nutrition.

The first Walk Across Williamson event of

2009 was held February 7.  Participants had a great time and were given free coupon incentives from Smoothie King and Chick-fil-A. There were also school and team incentives available.  Schools who brought at least ten students earned their school a bonus $100 grant.  Plus, students, parents and staff who belong to their school's activity team earned 150 bonus minutes.

A record number of participants took part in February's "Walk Across Williamson" event.  Bowie Nature Park led the way, with as many as 93 registered people.  The next opportunity to earn bonuses will be Saturday, March 7 at one of the five participating parks.

Of course, the best part is that families and students are getting involved in a healthy activity.  The purpose of the contest is to motivate individuals to be involved in consistent activity throughout the competition.  The ultimate goal is to continue beyond the end of the competition since activity has numerous health benefits.   Everyone involved thus becomes a winner by improving their own personal health.
