OPEN ZONED SCHOOLS
UPDATE

On January 20, the Williamson County Board of Education approved three open zoned schools, with stipulations, for the 2009-10 school year, Brentwood Middle, Centennial High and Page High.  Below is a status update.

Brentwood Middle School will be open zoned to 50 students from across the district with first priority given to Grassland Middle School students.

Centennial High and Page High will be open zoned next year with Centennial open to 25 freshmen, 25 sophomores and 25 juniors, and Page will be open to 75 freshmen only.  First priority at both schools will be given to students zoned to Independence and Ravenwood.  To date, the district has approved 23 out of zone requests for Grassland students to attend Brentwood Middle; approved four students to attend Centennial from Independence and Ravenwood; and approved 15 students to attend Page from Independence and Ravenwood.

Only students from over capacity schools (Grassland Middle, Independence High and Ravenwood High) will be approved prior to May 15.  When considering out of zone requests from Page High to Centennial High and Centennial High to Page High, the amendment approved by the School Board was that neither Page nor Centennial would lose any staff as a result of students “swapping” schools.  For example, because of current staffing ratios (PHS 18:1) (CHS 21.7:1), if 22 students go from Centennial to Page then at least 18 students would need to go from Page to Centennial.  Out of zone requests submitted prior to May 15 will not be approved if the number of out of zone students causes a staffing change at either Page or Centennial.  To date, the district has received 29 requests to attend Brentwood Middle from middle schools other than Grassland; received nine requests to attend Centennial from high schools other than Independence and Ravenwood; and received 19 requests to attend Page from high schools other than Independence and Ravenwood.

To take advantage of open zoning, parents must follow specific directions that can be found on our website at www.wcs.edu.  Select Parent Resources, and then select Enrollment for Students.  Parents may obtain the out of zone form at any of the schools involved or from the web.  Parents must complete the request form which includes obtaining the signatures of both the zoned school principal and the out of zone school principal.
