Text Box: What is the
DesCartes Learning Continuum?

The DesCartes Learning Continuum is a document, written by NWEA, that helps teachers put the IAI information to use in their classrooms. The DesCartes Learning Continuum is available on our district web site as well as at each school site for teachers, parents, and students to access. It contains separate sections for mathematics and for reading. Within each subject are goal strands that are found in our state standards. The goal strands are then broken down into ten-point RIT bands, in which skills and concepts are found.

Primary uses of the Learning Continuum

Teachers can identify each student’s instructional level and use this level as a starting place for instruction.

The RIT bands help teachers in preparing for flexible skill groups to better meet the needs of all students.

It helps teachers maximize growth for all students.
