.: WBHS9 IS BORN
In 1999, the City of Brentwood allocated Channel 9 to Brentwood High School
from its cable company, Comcast. At first, the channel served as a billboard
for high school activities. One computer and a school secretary served
as the total operating system for the channel.
In the spring of 2001, Mark Madison and the television classes assumed the
responsibility of the channel and began the process of developing a full-time
station with coverage for the entire northern half of Williamson County. Armed
with little more than three old cameras and one linear editing system, five
interns and four classes of high school students set out to make Channel 9
the BEST educational access channel in the state.
Over the last five years WBHS9 has won over 100 State, Regional, and National
awards in numerous film festivals and video competitions around the country.
As a member of the Tennessee Press Association and the National Journalism
Education Association, the "company" has served to install five in-house television
stations in elementary schools in Williamson County. Several schools around
the State of Tennessee have visited Channel 9 to pattern their developing programs
around this operation.
Today, thanks to the dedication of the students, community, and parents,
WBHS9 has established its program as the leader in sports programming, school
events,
and community activities. Programming now exceeds ten hours per day and a
policy of only repeating programs twice in one year has made the station a
favorite
of Comcast subscribers.
Currently, ninety percent of all students who complete the
rigorous course offerings in broadcasting move on to major in the communications
field at colleges and universities
across the nation. Three former students completed last summer internships
at NBC and FOX networks in New York .
