Mr. . Keidel has given his permission for Brentwood High School to participate in the English-Speaking Union’s 2010 National Shakespeare Contest. Students in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades study, memorize, and perform a “monologue” from a Shakespeare play. The winner of our school competition advances to the Regional Competition, held on Saturday March 6, 2010.
On April 24-27, 2010, the Regional winner receives, all expenses paid, a weekend of theater, workshops, and sightseeing in New York City for the National Competition, held on the stage at Lincoln Center. The National Competition winner receives a summer acting course at the British American Drama Academy (BADA) in Oxford, Awards of $1,000 and $500 go to the first and second place contestants.
Encourage students in this
competition--think about the challenge and opportunity this
contest offers. If you know of any student in the 9th
through the 12th grade at BHS who would enjoy this learning
experience, please talk to him or her about entering the
competition.
Students can receive as much help (coaching) as they want.
All the information can be found at www.esuus.org Click on National Shakespeare Competition on the home page.
Email Mrs. Huddleston at leeh@wcs.edu for more information. She will coordinate the competition: asking for three judges to judge the contestants, placing bulletins around the school and in the BHS Announcements, and Bruins Doins.
Mrs. Huddleston will continue to keep you up-dated as to the date for our school competition--to be scheduled in January or early February of 2010. She will also be available to coach any student who might be interested in entering the contest.
Columbia State Dual Enrollment Students
It’s “Priority Registration Week”!
In case you don’t know, that means current students can
register early for spring classes (prior to
registration opening up to the new community students). This is
a great opportunity to get the spring class you want, on the day
and time you want/need it. With so many of you juggling high
school work loads, work hours and/or extracurricular activities,
this is a great opportunity to get the schedule you need. So,
don’t wait! Do it this week and hold your seat.
Remember you can drop and add if something comes up and you need
to revise your schedule.
Remember, your academic advising begins and ends with your high school guidance counselor. Most dual enrollment students will be eligible starting Thursday or Friday, based on the number of completed college hours earned thus far. Use the first part of the week to speak with your counselor to determine what course(s) may best work for your high school schedule.

Have you noticed the "outlines of bodies" that are in the hallways at BHS?
Luckily, no one has been "murdered" at BHS. Those outlines are for “The Great American Smoke-Out” which is officially celebrated on Thursday, November 19. The American Cancer Society created The Great American Smoke-Out to encourage users of tobacco to try and go one day (11/19/09) without smoking. If a person can go 24-48 hours without smoking, his/her chance of quitting increases.
If you have any questions or would like more info, please feel free to email the STARS counselor, Julieanna Huddle at julieannah@wcs.edu
Here is a "Great American Smoke-Out" testimonial from Marketing Teacher, Lisa Nease, about her father:
In 1991, a young student at my father’s school asked him to give up smoking for one day, November 19, Great American Smoke Out Day. Having been an avid smoker for 40 years, he reluctantly said yes and signed the contract that the young student had. He made it through the 24 hours and decided after the first 24 hours, he’d try another 24 hours. Then those 48 hours turned into a week, then two weeks, then a month, then forever. He is celebrating his 75th birthday today and has been smoke-free for 18 years. ……. And it all started with a young high school student caring enough about her teacher to ask him to quit for one day. If you don’t ask, you don’t get!!!! Ask someone to quit tomorrow…just for one day. You never know what a difference it might make.
