It is a exciting and sobering story of slave trade and plantation life in the 1700s. Amari, a 15-year- old African girl, is stolen from her village and sold as a slave in America. She is purchased as a birthday gift for the master’s 16-year-old son. She along with Polly, an indentured white girl, become unlikely friends when they are forced to live together on the plantation. The master’s fury spans Amari and Polly to escape toward a place of freedom. Mrs. Kiser If you like this, try also Julius Lester’s Day of Tears— a first-person account from Emma, a slave, as her master hosts the largest slave action in American history in Savannah, Georgia in 1859 to pay off his gambling debts. You won’t be able to put his down either!
