We STRONGLY recommend that you review your child’s selection for appropriate language and content. Grade level: 10
Book title: My Losing Season
Author: Pat Conroy
Type: Non Fiction
Rating: 5
Summary: This book covers the very disappointing senior season of a famous author's college basketball career. Besides trashing his coach throughout the book, he rekindles friendships with many of the boys (men) who went through the agony with him.
Quote #1"I found my joy, unrecapturable beyond the realm of speech or language, and I lost myself in the pure, dazzling majesty of my sweet, swift game." Conroy's love for basketball comes out in this quote and he nails the passion that we players feel for the game.
Quote #2"His father's gentleness flowed like some rare form of honey over his son's dark mood." I think he is recognizing a Dad's connection with his son. Sometimes parents just need to chill and just be there for their kids when they are hurting or depressed.
Quote #3"I have come to a conclusion about my country ... America is a good enough country to die for even when she is wrong." He's saying this about the Vietnam era, but maybe it applies to today, too.
Opinion: I really liked this book. I give it 5 stars and a big thumbs up. It talks all about basketball which I love, but it also discusses his journey to becoming a writer as well. There are patches of the book that read a little slow, but for the most part it was really good. If you are an athlete in any sport, you can identify with the love he had for the game. If you are interested in ever being a writer, this is a must read as well.
