Teen Read Week was celebrated in the BHS library October 17-21.
We joined hundreds of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country to encourage teens to celebrate this year’s theme, “Get Real! @ your library®” and to read for the fun of it!
Teen Read Week is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association. This year’s theme encouraged teens to explore the world of nonfiction books, such as biographies, self-help books, strange but true stories, and more. Many books were on display to help students with their book selections. In the BHS library, many other exciting activities took place during the week.
When students checked out a book OR completed an online book review form at the library's website their name was entered into a raffle for a $40 gift certificate from Borders. The students checked out many books to read and also received a teen read bookmark and candy!!! At the end of the week, David A. was the lucky winner of the Borders gift certificate.
Each day the first student that answered the quiz question from the p.m. announcements won a free book and a bag of Halloween candy. The winners included: Jacob H., Evie W., and Sara F.
On Wednesday, October 19th, every homeroom was asked to participate in TEEN READ WEEK by participating in the BHS Limerick Contest hosted by the school’s LITERARY MAGAZINE. During homeroom on Wednesday, every student read a packet of thirty limericks that were written by their fellow students and voted on their favorite. Congratulations to sophomore Bryan M. for winning the first annual school wide limerick contest. He will receive free ice cream for a week in the cafeteria!
Also during the week teens were encouraged to vote for their favorite books along with teens across the nation at www.ala.org Many of these books were on display in the library for student check-out. Each year YALSA comprises the Teens’ Top Ten books of the year. To view the Teens Top Ten lists, visit http://www.ala.org/ala/yalsa/teenreading/teenstopten/teenstopten.htm
On Thursday, the library staff provided “Treats for Teachers” all day in the library.
