American Red Cross Youth Club  (Meetings are held the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month at 6:50 a.m.)

Vision Statement:  The American Red Cross educates, encourages, and empowers youth to be role models in their communities so, as current and future leaders, they can further the mission and fundamental principals of the Red Cross and touch more lives nationwide and around the world. Faculty sponsor, Jennifer Perry.

Anime (Currently inactive.)

The mission of the Anime club is not only to watch Anime but it also a forum for discussion of all things Japanese. The main activities of the club are: Anime watching, mangas, drawing, cosplay, and Japanese culture such as food and dress.  This club is open to all BHS students. Faculty sponsor is Diana Tomayko.

Art Club  (Meetings are the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 2:40 p.m. in Rm. B-19)

The Art Club is open to all students interested in art and art sponsored activities.  The Art Club strives to involve its members in art activities that interest the students, and also benefit the school and community.  The Art Club is sponsored by Mrs. Barbara Bullard and Mrs. Kathy Humbert

Art Contest

The BHS Art Competition takes place in the Spring and is sponsored by the Academic Fine Arts Committee.  The contest is open to any grade level BHS student (not just those enrolled in art classes) with categories for every media of artwork.  Winning entries are on display at the spring Academic Awards. Faculty sponsors are Kathy Humbert and Barbara Bullard, B20.

Band--Marching and Jazz

The marching band is fast becoming recognized as one of the top programs in Tennessee. Students participating in the program must attend summer band camp and after school rehearsals in the fall. And with the exception of color guard, must be enrolled in one of the four band classes. The marching band performs at football games, festivals, competitions, etc.  Faculty sponsors are Brian Diller and Randy Box, D2.

The BHS Jazz Band is open to any BHS student with adequate experience and skill playing a jazz band instrument.  Meets after school in the spring to continue to expand and develop playing skills as a Jazz Ensemble.  Faculty sponsors are Brian Diller and Randy Box, D2.

Bruin Book Club - (Meetings are after school on alternate Fridays)

The book club is perfect for students who love to read great books and discuss them.  All ages are welcome, teachers, students, everyone.  We meet in A-24 after school on alternate Fridays and indulge in our passion--discussing our favorite read.

Bruinettes Dance Team

Sponsor is Lori Eggleston, Guidance Office.

The Care Bear Club (No scheduled meeting dates.*)

For highly motivated students willing to make a difference and help students with special needs.  Students help by attending community outings, socializing within a school day-to-day environment (e.g. lunches, peer buddies in class), attending Special Olympics in the Fall and Spring, coordinating and participating in the Care Bear games.  Faculty sponsors are Jill Smith and Teresa Ashcraft, B9A.

*Most students volunteer during their study hall or homeroom, through the Service  Learning class, or are office workers.  If several students request to volunteer during the same period, the highest grade level is chosen first. Students are expected to maintain passing grades in all classes and shall not have any teacher deny them missing instructional time due to behavior, absences, etc.    Care Bears must be in good standing in all classes to participate in events.   

Chess Club (Currently inactive.)

Group meets to promote the game of Chess for fun and competitions.   Membership is open to all students.  Faculty sponsor is Diana Tomayko (C-10B). 

Color Guard / Winter Guard  (After school rehearsals and summer band camp are mandatory.)

Flag and movement ensemble that accompanies the marching band and competes in color guard competitions in the winter.  This is a highly aerobic activity.  After school rehearsals and summer band camp are mandatory.  Only students who are part of the fall marching band program are eligible to join the winter program. Auditions for the fall color guard are held each year in April or May. Faculty sponsors are Brian Diller and Randy Box, D2  

Computer Club  ( Meets the 2nd Thursday & 4th Friday of each month at 2:40 p.m. in Room C2)

The Computer Club will allow the students the use of the computer lab to build their own computer (at the students’ expense) without the teaching that would be part of the Computer Operating Systems class.  There will be some open discussion of new computer hardware available and other innovations.  There is also a possibility the students will be able to participate in a “LAN party” with the systems they built.

CRASH (Meetings are held every Friday in Room C-10A)

CRASH is an organization promoting relationship-based evangelism by passionately pursuing a revolutionary Jesus.  Everyone is welcome to come spend time with friends learning about and worshipping God. Faculty sponsor’ is Dr.  Ron Thompson, C10A.

Culinary Arts Club (Meets 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2:40 p.m.)

The Culinary Arts Club is open to all students at BHS.  There are no prerequisites other than a love for food and cooking.  We will explore the preparation of foods from many cultures and regions, as well as various cooking techniques and recipes.  We will coordinate our cooking experiences with noted restaurants and chefs in the Nashville area and include local cooking schools as well. Our goal is to expose club members to a variety of cooking experiences so that students with a passion for cooking could make a possible career choice, or at least create a life-long hobby.  Faculty sponsor is Sue Mounts, A24.

DECA

DECA is an educational youth organization designed for students enrolled in Marketing Education.  Students will participate in various leadership, community service, occupational, and social activities.  Each year the BHS DECA Chapter conducts and huge fund raiser as a community service project.  They have raised over $125,000 for charitable causes over the last 3 years.  Many of the students participate in competitive events and represent BHS very proudly at the regional, state, and national levels.  Any student interested in pursuing a career in Marketing or Business is encouraged to enroll in Marketing and be a part of this wonderful student organization.  It is an integral part of the total marketing program.  Faculty sponsor is Lisa Nease, C7.

Destination Imagination (DI meets at team members’ homes, so meeting dates are scheduled, when needed, by team members.)

Destination Imagination is a creative problem-solving competition on an international scale. Any student with a desire to solve problems creatively in a team setting may join DI.  Problems range from dramatic interpretation to technological design.  Faculty sponsor is Emily Sherman, A12.  

Drama Club/Thespians (Drama club meets the 1st Thursday of each month at 2:40 p.m.)

This club is for students interested in the theater arts both in school and in the surrounding community.  The club directs and produces a major all-school production.  The club goes to shows around the community as well as encourages the performing arts through involvement in community service projects and participation in the school-sponsored events.  We also attend the Tennessee State Thespian Conference each January. Students are invited to join the International Thespian Society based on their involvement in high school theatre.  An awards banquet is held each May honoring awards earned each year.  Faculty sponsor is Lisa Moody, D4.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Meetings are held every Thursday at  6:45 a.m. and some evenings.)

FCA is a Christian organization run by students for fellowship and support through a variety of activities.  It is open to all students, athletes and non-athletes alike.  Faculty sponsors are Teresa Ashcraft and Dan Winfree. 

Forensics (Meetings are usually held every Tuesday at 2:40 p.m.)

Application for membership is open to students in grades 9-12 who have at least a B in all subjects from the previous grading period, who can attend weekly meetings and practices, and who can compete in tournaments on the weekend.  Prospective members and their parents need to attend an orientation at the beginning of the school year to learn more about membership requirements.  Faculty Sponsor is Harriet Medlin.

Frisbee League

French Club (Meetings are held the 2nd Monday of the month at 2:40 p.m. or when needed.)

The club is open to students enrolled in a French class or who have taken French.  It meets monthly to promote activities that encourage students' exposure to the French language and culture.  Faculty sponsor is  Virginie Jordan.

Future Business Leaders of America (currently an inactive club)

FBLA is the premier business education association preparing students for careers in business through guest speakers, field trips, competitions, and leadership opportunities. The club’s goal is to bring school and business closer together.  This club is open to all students.  Faculty sponsor Vicki Youngman, C8.

Future Teachers and Leaders of America (currently an inactive club)

The club is open to all Junior and Senior high school students interested in pursuing education as a career.  There are several opportunities for service each year, including a service project.  Club members meet once every two weeks.  FTLA helps with the Foster Children’s Christmas party, Teacher Appreciation Week, and has at least one field trip per year.  The faculty sponsor is Amanda Bicsak, A30.

GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance)

The mission of the Brentwood High School Gay-Straight Alliance is to provide a safe, positive, and accepting environment for GLBT students and their straight allies.  The group offers peer support to help foster healthy identities.  Activities include discussions of GLBT-related issues and current events (e.g., homophobia, acceptance, religion, family and friends, politics, coming out); visits by guest speakers; and participation in local and nationwide awareness campaigns such as the National Day of Silence.  Faculty sponsor is Emily Sherman, A12.

German Club (Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 6:45 a.m.)

The German Club is open to all current and former German students at BHS and BMS,  as well as others with a special interest in German language and culture.  Annual events include dinner at Gerst Haus restaurant, Oktoberfest in Clarksville, German film nights and “Fake German tourist day.” Faculty sponsor is Emily Sherman, A12.

Green Team  (Officers meeting is held on the 2nd Friday of the month at 2:40 p.m. 
                    All members meeting on the 4th Friday of the month at 2:45 p.m.)

Brentwood Green Team is open to all students with an interest in outdoor activities and
conservation.  This student-led organization provides opportunities for outdoor recreation
(such as hiking, camping, canoeing) as well as working to increase awareness of environmental issues at BHS and in the community.  Members are expected to participate at least twice per year in environmental-related service activities.  Faculty sponsor is Emily Sherman, A12.

Habitat for Humanity  (Meets 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7 a.m. in the Media Center )

The Brentwood High School Chapter of Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to providing affordable housing to low-income families in Williamson County.  Organized in 1999, this chapter is the first and only one in Tennessee run by a high school.  Members, working with alumni and parents, raise the funds for and participate in the actual construction of a house.  The chapter is open to all BHS students.  Faculty sponsors are Diana Tomayko and LeAnn Kiser. 

History Club (Meetings are held Wednesdays at 2:45 to 4:00 p.m. )

The mission of the history club is to study history at a more in depth level by exposing the students to other subjects that can not be taught in the class such as historical preservation. The main activities of the club include field trips to local historical sites, history vs. Hollywood, and historical debate. This club is open to all BHS students. Faculty sponsor is .

Interact Club (Meetings are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:50 am in room B-15.) 

The Interact Club is a combination community service and social club sponsored by the Brentwood Rotary Club that provides guidance and inspiration.  The purpose of the Interact Club is to provide the opportunity for young people to work together in a world of fellowship dedicated to service and international understanding.  Faculty sponsors are Vivia Smith and Betty Hood.

Key Club (Meetings are held the 2nd Friday of the month at 7:00 a.m.)

The Key Club is affiliated with the Kiwanis Club International.  We tutor at the Boys and Girls Club in Franklin.  The Key Club allows members to have fun while helping people in need.  Faculty sponsor is Jean Kleine-Kracht, A21.

Latin Club (Meets 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at  2:40 in C10-B)

In addition to the Latin language, members study Greek and Roman history, mythology, and culture.  Members attend mid-state and state competitions in the spring as part of the Junior Classical League.  Sponsor is Diana Tomayko.

Literary Magazine Staff (Meets every Wednesday at 2:40 p.m. in A-28)

Literary magazine staff is open to all students who enjoy writing short stories and poems and taking pictures and doing artwork.   The staff puts together two issues a year and last year ranked second in the state. Also, two issues a year of student art work and writings are published.  Writing time is available for students on Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school to come in and write on their own.  Faculty sponsor is Jan Little.

Math Team  (There is no firm meeting day and time.  Meeting dates will be announced.)

This is a group of students who enjoy participating in the Interscholastic Math League and other local and national high school mathematics competitions.  Faculty sponsor is Betty Hood, B12.

Mock Trial   (Meetings will be announced.)

This club is for students with an avid interest in the law.  Students who enjoy speech, drama, and debate will appreciate the challenge of Mock Trial. This year, the Mock Trial club is made up by two teams of nine members each.  We compete in the district Mock Trial Competition at the end of February every year.  The season goes from mid-November through February, and practices are held after school.  The faculty sponsor is Belinda Wade, Room A-7.

Mu Alpha Theta (Meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of each month at 6:50 a.m.)

Mu Alpha Theta is the national high school and junior college Mathematics Honor Society.  It is dedicated to the study and appreciation of the artistry that generates mathematics.  Recommendations from math teachers are required for membership. Each member provides 2 hours of free math tutoring each month in the BHS Learning Lab as a service requirement.  Faculty sponsors are Betty Hood and Shari Bell, B12.

National English Honor Society

National Honor Society (Normal meeting day is the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 7am in the Library.)

The BHS National Honor Society recognizes and encourages academic achievement and also develops the ideals of scholarship, character, service and leadership.  Each spring, juniors who have a 3.8 (or above) grade point average and who represent the above listed ideals are invited to join the NHS.  Faculty sponsors are Ron Thompson, Christie Hawk , and Jean Kleine-Kracht.

National Technical Honor Society  (There is no scheduled meeting dates.)

This is a national organization established to recognize students that are highly successful in the Broadcast field and in academic work.  Open to students who are juniors or seniors that have a 3.4 overall grade average and are enrolled in the level II/III/or IV Broadcasting program. Students enter video competitions and must provide community service work related to broadcasting field.  Students who complete the program are issued honor cords that are worn at graduation to identify them as members. Faculty sponsor is Ronnie Adcock.

New Bruins Club (NBC)  (Every Wednesday after school)

Just moved to Tennessee?  Attending a Williamson County school for the first time?  We are so glad that you are here--we want to meet you and help you connect with BHS.  There is definitely something for everyone, here at BHS, and we cherish the opportunity to help you find your niche.  Come to A-24 every Wednesday after school and join us--we have even been accused of eating chocolate, shhhhhh, don't tell, they'll all want to come!  Faculty sponsor is Sue Mounts, A-24.

 

Newspaper (You must be enrolled in Journalism/Newspaper to participate.)

Rock Climbing Club

The season is from November to March each year. Students compete four times against other schools at Climb Nashville. The club fee covers the membership fee at Climb Nashville from October through March as well as their gear. Students benefit from professional rock climbing coaching and planned workouts. Faculty sponsor is Rebecca Roa, A15.

Science National Honor Society (Meetings:  third Wednesday after school and 1st Wednesday after school for officers)

The purpose of this organization is to encourage scientific thought,  advance scientific knowledge, and communicate with both the scientific and civic communities.  The chapter accomplishes this through field trips, community service projects, speakers, and a variety of other activities.  The organization is open to Juniors and Seniors who have a minimum GPA of 3.75, a Science average of 87% or higher,  honors or AP level science course experience, and have successfully completed the application process.    Applications are available in the spring to rising juniors and senior. Faculty Sponsors:  Ashley Renner and Doug Murray

Skills USA Broadcasting  (No scheduled meetings.)

Open to broadcasting students after successful completion of Media Concepts.  Students explore career options, complete industry projects, community projects, and may attend the state and national VICA conferences.  Faculty sponsor is Ronnie Adcock. 

Spanish Club (Meetings are announced to members as needed.)

The Spanish Club is open to any student enrolled in a Spanish class or a student who has taken Spanish. The only prerequisites for becoming a member are that you maintain a C average in your Spanish class and that you come with exciting new ideas. Students usually meet once a month for activities. The majority of activities occur Jan. - May.  Faculty sponsor is Rebecca Roa, A15.  

Spanish National Honor Society (Meeting is the 1st Tuesday of the month at 6:50 a.m.)

Students in Spanish 4 and AP are eligible to join. Activities include going to Belmont

University Saturday afternoons to work with Hispanic children (Hispanic Achievers. Program sponsored by the YMCA), tutoring students in the Learning Lab, and hosting a Spanish Christmas and Holiday party for the staff, faculty, and administration in December. The faculty sponsor is Ron Thompson (C10A).  

 Students Taking A Right Stand (S.T.A.R.S.)  Executive Council

S.T.A.R.S. SEC (Student Executive Council) is a prevention group for students who choose to abstain from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, violence and other life controlling problems.  SEC members participate in educational and fun activities as well as community service learning projects and cross- age mentoring. Meetings are held in the STARS room, A-16, during 5B and 6A lunches every Friday.

S.T.A.R.S. Specialist is Julieanna Huddle, A-16.   Faculty Sponsor is Rene Phillips, A-13. 

Student Senate & Student Council (Meets daily during the 5th and 6th class periods.)

In the spring, the student body of BHS elects its Student Senate officers (Student Body & grade level Class Officers) for the following school year.  Student Council representatives (4 per grade level) are also elected or appointed each spring for the following year.  Student Senate & Student Council meet daily during the #5 & #6 Class Periods.  Senators & Council Reps must adjust their schedules to accommodate for this daily obligation that integrates their homeroom & study hall placements.  The Faculty sponsor is Neil Skalitzky (A-10).

Teen-Age Republican Club  (Currently inactive.)

The purpose of the TAR is to encourage political activity and thought among high school students.  The BHS TAR has various activities for members and interested students such as volunteering in political campaigns, guest speakers, debates and discussions, and community service.  Faculty sponsor is Tony Grimes, B3.

TV Pro (Broadcasting and Journalism)

Yearbook   (You must be enrolled in the Journalism/Yearbook class to participate.) 

Grade Level:  11-12     Credit: 1-Full Year  
Recommended Prerequisite:  By teacher recommendation only

This Journalism curriculum requires the production of  a 300-page yearbook, The Mark of the Bruin, and  6 issues of the school newspaper, The Voice.  Computer skills are essential, although the student will learn InDesign.  They will use InDesign and develop a theme, design cover and title sheets, create a ladder, organize sales and distribution of the book, sell advertising, finalize completed pages on the computer, and set up and meet publication deadlines.  Photography interest/proficiency is also important.  Only one credit may be earned in Journalism. Students must be highly motivated, creative, have an interest in both the issues of school life and photography.  Students will be expected to learn graphic design using Quark Xpress, to sell advertising, and to edit copy.  Articles will reflect research and the most recent news on breaking issues through webquests.

Young Life (Club meetings are held on Thursday nights.  Smaller groups called Campaigners meet throughout the week as well.  )

Young Life is a Christian organization that is open to every student. 

Mission Statement:  Young Life thinks the world of kids. We believe that they deserve to know what real life can hold for them. Young Life leaders are caring adults who come sharing that hope as well as fun and lasting friendships with kids. Young Life is also all about fun. From club and camp to Campaigners and other activities, teenagers will have a blast laughing, trying new things and being with their friends

A weekend trip to a Young Life camp is scheduled in the fall and a week long trip in the summer.  For more information please visit www.wilco.younglife.com.  Faculty sponsor is Karen Painter.

Youth in Government

Youth in Government is an academic club for all grade levels.  Youth in Government consists of two major events that are sponsored by the YMCA: Model United Nations and Youth Legislature.  Faculty sponsor is Belinda Wade, A7.

Model U.N.  (Meetings are held every Friday at 7:00 a.m.)

During the fall semester, groups of 2-4 students represent a United Nations member nation, doing research and preparing a resolution for the annual conference in November.  The club is open to all grades. 

 Youth Legislature  (Meetings are held every Friday at 7:00 a.m.) 

During the spring semester, groups of 2-4 students prepare a mock piece of legislation for the Tennessee Congress.  Students attend the annual conference in the spring, where they present their bills and debate other legislation.  The club is open to all grades.
