English III AP (Language & Composition) |
Grade Level:
11
Credit:
1-Full Year
Recommended
Prerequisite: English Honors I and II
This is a
college-level reading and composition course. Students have the
opportunity to earn college credit by passing a standard exam in
May. This course curriculum has passed the audit requirements
for the AP Board. As a result, the curriculum and the
requirements are college level and the expectations of the AP
Board must be followed.
Students in
this class must master a challenging course of interrelated
disciplines and genres. The AP Language and Composition exam is
the primary goal; but, students must also develop a solid
background in the American literature canon, in order to prepare
for English IV AP Literature and Composition. While the primary
focus is nonfiction, students will also develop a background in
American fiction, as they both prepare for the AP Language exam
in May and the AP Literature experience the following year. As
a result, the course will involve reading and evaluating
non-fiction texts, synthesizing a variety of sources, reflecting
and analyzing, developing vocabulary, plus improving writing
style in a variety of essays (in both timed one-draft and
un-timed multiple-draft formats, both inside and outside of
class) that address typical AP essay prompts.
