Curriculum Enhancement

Transition Programs to assist eighth grade students entering into the high school are initiated by the Transition Team, comprised of middle and high school staff, parents and students.  The Transition Team plans a 12-month program beginning with Cross-age Mentoring in February, while the eighth graders are still in middle school. The mentoring program gives high school students the opportunity to travel to the middle schools to talk with the eighth graders about high school life and about making smart decisions regarding tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.  Inviting the eighth graders to shadow a high school student for one day at BHS takes place in April. During registration in February, counselors meet individually with students and their parents at the middle school, helping the family to begin developing a personal relationship with BHS staff even before the eighth grader begins high school.  Enrichment activities continue throughout the summer and freshmen year, coupled with peer tutoring for those in need of extra help with their studies.

Science Research Program exposes BHS students to biomedical and engineering research at the university level and higher. Students are initially placed in a research environment / laboratory as a volunteer. After gaining valuable insight and experience, students are assigned an individual research project by the cooperating principal investigator(s). The products of this student research are presented at student symposiums and scholarship competitions.

Three examples of competitions are as follows: Middle Tennessee Science and Engineering Fair, Siemens Science Competition, Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.  Students are encouraged to join by their junior year, providing enough time to adequately prepare a competitive project. Student researchers work during the school year, as well as, during the summer. Therefore, there is a major time commitment. If interested, please complete an information sheet which you can obtain from Mr. Riley in Room B4.

The Career Shadow Program is part of the English IV curriculum.  All seniors choose mentors in a career field of their choice and shadow them for one school day in the fall. Students assess their day on-the-job when they return to the classroom by writing a reflective essay on their experience.

Drivers Education is offered both in the Fall and in the Spring after school, and also during Summer School.  The fee is approximately $240 as set by the WCBE.  Thirty (30) hours of classroom instruction is mandatory, followed with six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel driving.  The grade is recorded on the transcript and calculated into the cumulative GPA.

The S.H.I.N.E. Program seeks to recognize a greater range of students for both attendance and academic excellence.  S.H.I.N.E. or Seeking Honor, Improvement and Notable Excellence, awards students with a S.H.I.N.E. card at the end of each quarter.  A gold card, all A’s and 1 absence, a blue card, all A’s and B’s and 2 absences, or a white card, nothing lower than a 75 and 3 absences is issued to students giving them privileges and discounts.
