7th Grade Visual Arts The seventh grade Visual Arts classes recently created a series of bumper stickers and print ads for four presidential candidates (Republican, Democrat, Green and Libertarian) as part of their graphic unit. Students drew their candidates from a hat and then researched the candidates' platform on energy issues. Students then chose a demographic market to reach, and tailored their bumper stickers and ads to reach that market. Studio 8 Art Studio 8 artists are creating autobiographical book jackets using their experiences enlarging type proportionately. Learning this skill enables students to put the algebra skill of solving for x into real life practice. Other Studio 8 artists are creating symbolic watercolor still life paintings around the theme of “Stop. Think what’s important to you. You’ve got to make a serious decision.” Using symbolism enables students to create their own artistic vocabulary, which enlarges the world of art beyond the realm of skill. 6th Grade Computer Applications Students in Ms. Teri Schoof’s sixth grade computer applications class recently learned how to assemble a desktop computer. This lesson was designed to give students a hands-on opportunity to see how computers work. As part of the exercise, students were required to identify specific pieces and state their purpose. Leadership Students in Kristi Thoni’s leadership classes are working together to make their school better. After completing a needs assessment, students brainstormed with their groups to come up with ways to improve their school climate. Groups presented their action plans describing how they would implement their ideas before the administration and are currently awaiting a response as to whether their project will be implemented.
