Bowling Club  - Shayla Henry
Brentwood Middle School's bowling club is open to students at all grade levels.  They meet the fourth Monday of each month at the Franklin Bowling Lanes from 3:30-5:00 p.m.  The current cost is $5.50 for two games and shoe rental.

CHESS CLUB  - Adam Petree
The Brentwood Middle School Chess Club welcomes any student who wants to learn to play or improve at the game of the chess.  Students can play for fun or sharpen their skills for tournament competition.  Being a member of the chess club helps students improve problem solving and concentration skills, and it also allows for a positive environment for socializing for both boys and girls.  These students participate in tournaments during their Focus time.

CHORUS    - Carol Poston
Brentwood Middle School Chorus is for all students who enjoy singing.  There is a place for everyone!  The choruses are organized to teach the basics of choral singing, musicianship, and performance.  The various choruses will perform winter and spring concerts.  The 7/8 grade group, which meets on Monday and Tuesday mornings before school, will participate in additional activities throughout the year.  The 6th grade group meets on Wednesday and Thursday mornings before school.

DESTINATION IMAGINATION  - Colleen Spears
Destination Imagination is an activity that encourages team work, creativity, divergent thinking skills, and fun while solving a problem.  Teams consist of five to seven members.  Competitive teams are judged in three areas:  a long-term problem solution, the style in which the solution is presented, and spontaneous problem solving. There are no right or wrong answers.  All solutions are acceptable within the problem guidelines.  Each long-term problem has limitations, a cost limit, and a time limit.  Within this framework, teams attempt to produce solutions and present them in a creative and humorous way.  No outside assistance is allowed; all ideas and efforts must be student generated.  Competition ranges from regional to state and international levels.  Historically, Brentwood Middle School has had teams qualify for all three levels of competition.

DRAMATIC ARTS    -  Mary Young
All Brentwood Middle School students are invited to audition for our spring musical.  Students must be willing and able to rehearse Monday through Friday, after school.  Performances run for three nights, usually to a sell-out crowd!  If students would rather work behind the scenes, they may work on our various technical crews (sets/props, wardrobe, makeup, publicity, lights and sound).  Whether actor or crew member, a BMS theatre production is an exciting and fun way for students to become involved in their school.

FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN ATHLETES
Randy Paisley
Fellowship of Christian Athletes meets every Thursday morning in the Little Theater at 7:00 a.m.  Coach Phil Roach and Randy Paisley sponsor the student-led activities.  FCA is open to any boy or girl at Brentwood Middle School, whether or not they participate on one of the athletic teams.

FORENSICS  -  Mary Young
The Brentwood Middle Forensics team is competitive drama.  Students compete in a variety of categories from acting out scenes to reading poetry, to debate.  This activity helps students build higher level thinking skills and improves their public speaking and acting abilities.  Students compete in at least one major tournament per year, and select students perform their competitive pieces in our fall production, “Making Scenes”.

LITERARY MAGAZINE  -  Don Goforth
Students who participate in the literary magazine meet periodically and share written works created by fellow students.  At the end of each year, the group publishes a magazine of their creations.

MATH TEAMS
Sixth Grade:
Selection for the math team is made each spring from top sixth grade math students.  The students compete in a district-wide mathematics competition sponsored by Middle Tennessee State University.  Team members meet in after-school sessions to sharpen math skills and to plan competitive strategies for the yearly competition.  The Brentwood Middle School Math Team consistently ranks among the top teams in the contest.
Eighth Grade:  The eighth grade math team is first selected by volunteers.  There are six students that can compete at each competition.   If more than six students would like to participate then the students have to take a test to qualify. Competition is at both the middle school and high school level. The team attends the state math competition at Belmont University in the Spring and also competes in the Interscholastic Math League four times per school year.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS (Model U.N.)
Colleen Spears
Are you interested in what is happening in other countries?  Model United Nations is an activity for students that want to learn about other countries.  Students, in teams of 2-4, research a country of their choice.  Finding a problem that could be shared at the Model UN, students prepare a presentation. On the day of the conference, students present the resolution to the Model United Nations, which consists of other students.  Teams form and select a country in September, teams meet weekly to prepare for the conference which is held in December.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY  -  Patty Garman
This activity is open to all grade levels with competition at the local, state and national level.  Students create displays that educate others regarding the assigned National History Day theme.  They may elect to complete a research report or perform in a drama that reflects the yearly theme.

National Junior Honor Society  -  Robert Gibson
The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Brentwood Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization.  Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation:  scholarship, leadership, service/citizenship, and character.  Standards for selection are established by the national office of NJHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs.  Students are selected to be members by a five-member Faculty Council, appointed by the Principal, which bestows this honor each year upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school. Students who have attended Brentwood Middle School for a minimum of one semester are eligible for membership after the third grading period of the 7th grade. April is the membership drive month.  For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or better on a 4.0 scale. For more information regarding the selection process or membership obligations, refer to the NJHS Bylaws.

PEP BAND – Kevin Poe
Pep band is open to all students currently enrolled in the 7th and 8th grade band.  (Special permission may be granted to those students not in the 8th grade band who play piano, rhythm guitar, and bass guitar.)  This ensemble performs popular sports “stand” music and meets four times after school in preparation for a football game performance and performances at all in-school pep rallies.

ROBOTICS    - Colleen Spears
Lego Mindstorms and RoboLab are used to build and program a robot to compete in a challenge.  Teams must find a parent coach and register by the end of September.  Teams meet to research and ready the robot.  On the day of the competition, students race the clock with their robot and present ideas for the use of  robots in their research area.  The challenge is posted in mid-September; the competition is the first Saturday in December.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD - Erin McGill & Jennifer Shaw
Teams of 15 students work on their teamwork and problem solving throughout the year in preparation for each of the events.  There are multiple events in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computers and technology that follow the format of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games.

STARS EXECUTIVE COUNCIL - Katie Barkley
The STARS Student Executive Council is comprised of approximately 20  students from the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades who work directly with a Core team of teachers to determine worthy projects.  Students interested in being selected for the council must go through an application process which includes writing an essay and acquiring Core team recommendations.  The SEC plays a key role in promoting a drug-free, alcohol-free, and bully-free environment in the halls of Brentwood Middle.  Each year they promote these concepts through activities such as Red Ribbon Week and school-wide assemblies and activities.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT   - Kristi Thoni
The Brentwood Middle School SGA executive board meets every week.  The executive board consists of a President, Vice-President, and Secretary from the 7th and 8th grades.  These students are elected in the spring for the upcoming year.  After school has been in session for a month, students elect representatives from each homeroom, and grade level councils are formed.  These students represent all homeroom classes and meet monthly.  After a period of time, a 6th grade President and Vice-President are elected by the homeroom representatives.  The general purpose of the Student Government Association is to provide a forum for student expression, to inform students and faculty, to promote good relationships between the students and faculty, to better the welfare of the school, to assist in planning student activities, to promote community service, to promote school spirit and good citizenship, and to provide leadership for the student body.

YEARBOOK STAFF  - Lyn Anderson
Yearbook is open to all grade levels.  Meetings are held generally on Wednesdays and are based on need.  Students help decide theme, pick the cover, write topics for spreads, take photos for spreads, and help identify students.   Most work is done on the yearbook in the first semester.

YOUTH LEGISLATURE  - Colleen Spears
Politicians needed.  Would you like to sit in the seat of a State Senator?  You might have the chance if you participate in Youth Legislature.  In this program, students learn about the process of presenting a bill.  As members of the Senate or House of Representatives for a day, students present bills and vote on the bills presented by other students.  Forming teams in February, students meet weekly to prepare for the conference in May.
