BASEBALL
Tryouts for the baseball
team will be held during the break between fall and winter sports due to
the uncertainty of the late winter weather. Students are chosen
for the team on the basis of their particular baseball skills.
Players are rated based on hitting, fielding, pitching and catching,
speed and hustle as well as sportsmanship, attitude and attention.
BASKETBALL
Tryouts for the
basketball teams are held during the last week of October.
Students are critiqued on the various skills used in basketball.
CHEERLEADING
The cheerleading tryouts
are held in the Spring. For three days, the participants practice
a floor cheer, a sideline cheer, a dance, and a jump. On the
fourth day, they are judged by members of the UCA. The girls with
the top scores are placed on the squad. The squad practices twice a week
for a month before the season begins. During the season, they will
practice at least once a week depending on how many games are scheduled.
The squad also has a short practice before each game. The season begins
in August and lasts through the last week in February.
CROSS COUNTRY
Students interested in
participating in cross country should listen for announcements
concerning tryouts during the first week of school. Students will
run approximately 1.5 miles on a variety of courses.
DANCE TEAM
This is the first
year that
Brentwood
Middle School
will have a dance team. Student participating in this program,
will perform at the boys and girls varsity basketball games.
FOOTBALL
Tryouts for seventh or
eighth grade students wishing to be a member of the football team will
be held in April or May. Interested sixth grade students will have
the opportunity to tryout in August.
GOLF
Tryouts will be
held within the first two weeks of school. Interested students
should be able to shoot 44 or better on a 9 hole course.
MAT GIRLS
Tryouts for mat girls
are held during the first or second week in April. Participants
are critiqued by a panel of outside judges on the basis of poise and
personality; voice quality; cheerleading with a group of five or six;
and an individual cheer.
SOCCER
Soccer tryouts are
typically held in October following football and volleyball season.
The soccer season runs through November.
SOFTBALL
The tryouts for the
softball team are typically held the last week of February or the first
week of March. Students are chosen on the basis of their fielding,
batting, and pitching skills. Team work and attitude are also
considered.
TENNIS
The tennis teams
generally consist of 8-12 players. In each match there are 7
positions that play. Three singles positions and two doubles
positions. Players are ranked and play according to their ranked
position. The team is generally selected by the top 10 positions
at tryouts. These positions are determined by playing a
round-robin tournament. Tennis tryouts will be held during the first
week of March. All students wishing to participate should
bring to the tryout their own tennis racket and their own tennis balls.
Students should also dress warmly due to the uncertain weather
conditions during this month.
TRACK
Students participating in
track will take part in a variety of running events, along with jumping
and throwing events. All students interested in participating on the
track team will notified the second week of March. All students
will be allowed to participate as long as they are academically
eligible. The track season begins at the end of March.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball tryouts are usually held during the
first week of school. The team is selected on the basis of skill and
potential. Many of the sixth graders have never played volleyball
and so the sixth and seventh grade years are used a teaching years for
these players. The volleyball team is divided into three sections.
WRESTLING
Wrestling tryouts are
typically held during the second week of September. Selection for
the team is based on a student's ability, strength, stamina, attitude,
work ethic, and coach-ability.
