Brentwood Middle School

General Information

Hours:  School begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:40 p.m.

There are no early dismissals after 2:15 p.m.

Messages and Deliveries:

Messages and deliveries to students from parents need to be handled by the main office rather than calling or e-mailing the classroom and interrupting learning.  If you absolutely must get something to your child, do so by 10:30 a.m. so that it can be delivered to the student at lunch.  BMS cannot guarantee that messages received after lunch will be delivered as we will not interrupt the classroom and students do not always come by the office after dismissal for fear of missing the bus.

Textbooks:

Textbooks are furnished to student for use during the school year.  The student must pay for lost or damaged textbooks. School records can be withheld if books are not returned or paid for.

Lockers:

Hall lockers are assigned.  Lockers should be locked at all times.  Students should not give their locker combinations to anyone, and they should not rig the locker so that the locker opens automatically or by just turning the dial slightly.  Students are responsible for whatever is found in their lockers.  Any problems with locks or lockers should be reported to the office. Lockers can be searched by school officials.  Lockers can be taken away from a student for not following the rules or being tardy to class because of the locker.

Visitors:

All visitors are required to sign in at the front desk and receive a Visitor's tag.  Student visitors from other schools are not allowed at BMS.

Telephone Calls:

Plan ahead!  Make your plans for after school events before coming to school.  Students who become ill during the day need to report to the office or the clinic for the parent to be notified. Parent messages will be delivered over the intercom at the end of the day.

Fees and Fines:

Fees approved by WCSB may be charged by middle schools for activities that occur during regular school hours, supplies required for participation in all courses offered for grades, equipment and supplies required to participate in interscholastic athletics and band, and fees or tuition for summer school.  The payment of school fees is voluntary.  No fee will be charged any student as a condition of attending school, but students shall be responsible for normal school supplies, such as pencils and paper.  School fees are waived for students who are eligible to receive free or reduced-priced school lunches.  Applications are available in the school office.

Fines may be charged for overdue library books, lost, damages or destroyed textbooks, library books, workbooks, or other school property.  (For complete language see Board Policies)

Inclement Weather and Closing:

Every family should have a plan in place in case school should close early due to bad weather.  The school's phone system cannot handle a volume of last-minute phone calls to give students directions.  Long lines of students using the phone to find out whether or not to ride the bus defeats the purpose of an early dismissal.  Generally, it is best for the plan to be that the student will ride the buss home on any days school must close early.  On such days the buses are dismissed early enough to get the students home safely.  Parents may be temporarily away from the area and unaware that students need to be picked up.  Because of this students have been stranded at school while road conditions are worsening.  All students should have a key or some other method of access to their homes in case of emergencies.  All after school events are automatically cancelled if school closes early or there is no school.
