HOME PRACTICE - /r/
- Start
each practice time with the syllable drills (ray,
ree, rye,rho, ru, air, ear, ire, o'er, u'er, a
ray, eerie, ire i, o'er o, u'er u)
research
shows that continued practice on these helps
speed the forming of the new way to say it as a
habit. Emphasize the /r/ each time
accept only REALLY strong /r/ sounds!
Separate the /r/ from the vowel if needed to get
a clear /r/.
- Draw
out the r (make it more of an
er) in the word, and separate it from
the rest of the word, if need be, to emphasize it.
- Use
the following progression from easier to more
difficult moving to the next level as s/he
is able to easily and clearly pronounce /r/ at
each level.
- Words- r at the beginning, then middle, then end
(vocalic /r/ as in "bird" is most
difficult)
- Sentences- Have your child repeat a sentence you
have spoken with the /r/ words emphasized. Then
have your child create his/her own sentence using
the same target /r/ word(s).
- Reading point to the upcoming /r/s as a
prompt at first, then remove the point prompt.
- Conversational activities tell stories to
pictures, answer questions, discuss topics
combine with homework done out loud!
- Spontaneous speech select two or three
times a day to remind him/her initially and then
you monitor how the /r/s sound at dinner,
in the car going somewhere, before bed, etc.
Remind her/him often if you hear her/him slip
throughout the day!
