New Car Rider Dismissal Procedures

In our effort to better serve you and for your children’s safety, we are making some significant changes in our car dismissal procedures. Over the last few years, our student enrollment has increased and we have added many new staff members. While we strive to know each child and their parents, it is impossible for all of our staff to know each student and to which parent they belong. It is also inappropriate for each staff member to know the status of custody and/or living arrangements for each student. We understand that these new procedures may not be convenient for you, and for that we sincerely apologize; however we appreciate your cooperation and understanding. These new procedures will begin on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. Thank you in advance as we work toward a safer dismissal.

Students will stand or sit under the canopy by last name with A-E (red) in front of Mrs. Poston’s exit door, F-J (purple) in front of Mrs. Neal’s exit door, K-O (blue) in front of the doors, P-T (green) in front of the office window, U-Z (orange) in front of the principal’s office window. Students will remain in their area until they are dismissed to their car. In the case of two students in the same family but with different last names, they will stand by the last name of the youngest child. A teacher will stand with each group and an escort will walk the children in that group to the car once cars have stopped.

Each College Grove Elementary family will be issued two (2) car placards. These placards will be the color of the family’s last name (as mentioned above) and the student’s name(s) will be printed on the placard. The placard will hang from the rearview mirror on the front windshield so that car duty staff can read the child(ren)’s name(s). Parents will make two (2) lines pulling up to the front-most cone and turn off the car. Drivers of large vehicles should pull to the left lane. Then the driver will stand beside his/her car. The child will be escorted to his/her car when all cars have stopped and engines are turned off. The teacher will check child’s name and the placard before the student is released to the parent. Once the child is in the vehicle and seat belted in, the driver will turn on their headlights to signal the teacher at the front of the line they are ready to go. When all cars between the cones are ready, cars will be allowed to drive away. The next group of cars will pull up to the front-most cone and turn off their engines. Parents will stand beside their car and wait for their child to be escorted to the car. This process will continue until all students are dismissed.

Please note:

bullet

If someone other than the parent picks up a student, it is the responsibility of the parent to make sure the placard is given to the driver. The driver may be asked to present a picture ID so please have one available.

bullet To expedite car dismissal, parents are discouraged from conversing with teachers, administrators, and other drivers during dismissal.
bullet To ensure the security of each child, no child will be dismissed to an adult inside the school as they are walking out or to an adult who walks up to the school or sidewalk. Students will only be dismissed to an adult in the car line who has the appropriate placard. For your safety and the safety of your child, do not park in the parking lot and walk to the building.
bullet If your child(ren) walks home from school on a regular basis, please notify the office so we can keep this information on file. These students will be given a yellow card to attach to their backpack. Parents will also be given two yellow cards that indicate the child(ren)’s names and that they are walkers. Walkers will dismiss from the cafeteria.
bullet Students who have prior parental permission to ride home with another student (by written permission or phone call to the school before 3:15) should stand in the group with the student with whom they are riding home.
bullet Students who are not picked up by 3:45 will wait in the office until their parents arrive.
bullet Placards will be sent home with students on Friday, August 31.

Thank you for your patience with us as we continue to improve on providing the safest environment possible for your child.
