Credit Recovery

 

Target Population: Students in grades 9-12 who have previously failed credit(s) toward graduation are eligible for Credit Recovery or Promotion interventions.

1.Eligibility: Any student in grades 9-12 who has failed or received no-credit.

2.Participation is based on availability of coursework that might be needed for recovery of credit or extended learning time for passing a course.

3.Priority for Enrollment: Enrollment in this program will be first based on the highest grade level of a school. (i.e. seniors, juniors, sophomores, freshmen)

 

When will the credit recovery interventions be offered?

Interventions will be offered before and/or after school, on Saturday, and during summer months. Availability of CR hours will vary by school. Check with your school administration or counselors for current availability.

Williamson County Schools will be using Plato Software as the technology intervention component of the Credit Recovery Program.

 

What strategies will be used to Recover credit or Extend learning for promotion?

1.Digital Curriculum (PLATO) technology will be utilized for both instructional delivery and student management.

2.Digital Curriculum will emphasize individualized, self-paced, and self-directed learning strategies.

3.Repeated courses will be fast-tracked’ so that learning objectives not accomplished in the regular course will be the emphasis.

4.Extended learning time will be used in a way that develops skills that had previously not been mastered.

5.Credit Recovery interventions will be based on previous student learning and the need for additional skill development.

6.Students will rotate in and out of the program based on completion of their contract.

7.Students will show adequate progress by attending the required number of hours as suggested by diagnostic testing.

8.Completion of the student notebook, mastery testing at the 80% level, and any other contract requirements.

9.PLATO comprehensive and research- based software will be used in conjunction with and aligned with Williamson County, Tennessee, and national standards for skill development.

What will be required of Students enrolled in this Program?

1.Student Notebook: Students will be required to keep notes, progress reports, and printouts of successful mastery test completion.

2.Only three (3) attempts will be allowed for all Mastery Tests.

3.No help will be given on Mastery Tests.

4.Staff will ask to see student’s notes prior to helping with tutorials.

5.Students will use the PLATO software appropriately.

Students will not be able to use Credit Recovery to accelerate classes and/or graduate early.

Advantages of Credit Recovery

1.CR is an independent self-directed learning environment with no homework;

2.CR is more manageable and a less expensive alternative to correspondence courses and summer school classes;

3.Students will be able to earn more credits through extended learning time outside the regular school hours.

How do I Apply?

Please complete the following steps to apply for High School Credit Recovery.

1.Complete an application. Check with your school Principal or Guidance Counselor to pick up the application.

2.Turn the application in to the appropriate school official for processing. Your school administration will make the final decision for eligibility and participation in the program.

What Else Should I Know?

The Application process is the first step.  Students must apply and be selected for the program.  Students that are approved for credit recovery will be contacted by the school administration or guidance counselor to begin the enrollment process.

Students will take diagnostic tests in the subject that they wish to recover credit.

 School officials will conference with eligible students and/or their parents.

Students, parents, and school officials will sign a Credit Recovery contract.

PLATO Coursework Tutorials, Drills, Applications, Reviews, and Mastery Testing will begin.

Students will take notes on tutorials, print progress reports, and complete mastery tests on the way to recovering credit.

Successful completion of coursework, notebook, and mastery tests will allow students to earn credit for a previously failed course.

Student transcripts will be updated with credits and graduation information.
