NOTE: FOR ALL LANGUAGES
A beginning world language student must have mature study habits due to the cumulative nature of learning a world language.  Each lesson adds to the past lesson; therefore, what is mastered in one year must be retained for use the following year.  A student enrolled in the second year of any world language must have previously passed both semesters of the first year of that language. Honors world language classes begin in the second year of a language study.

ESL I-IV
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Placement by ESL or Counseling
English as a Second Language program is for students with a range of little or no English proficiency to intermediate English proficiency.  Students are placed in the program based on their performance on the standardized test adopted by the state of Tennessee and are placed in classes according to their English proficiency.  All language skills are addressed in the program with emphasis given to academic language to help in  content classes.  The goal of the ESL program is for all ELL students to pass all Gateway exams.  A credit is given for each ESL class; however, a maximum of two (2) ESL credits may replace two (2) of the English credits needed for graduation.

French I
Credit:  1 (full-year)

French I students are introduced to the basic skills of world languages with emphasis on vocabulary development and grammatical principles of the written and spoken language.  Cultural aspects of the French-speaking world are presented with the vocabulary and grammar study. 

French II
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of French I
French II places emphasis on verb tenses while further developing vocabulary and grammar through more complex reading, listening, writing, and oral communication skills.  Students continue to learn about the cultures of French-speaking countries.  Increasing emphasis is placed upon the use of French in the classroom.

French II Honors
Credit:  1 (full-year)

French II Honors is an accelerated class with emphasis on verb tenses, expanded vocabulary, and more complex reading and writing skills.  There is an increased emphasis placed upon the development of French-speaking skills and the use of French in the classroom. 

French III Honors

French III Honors focuses on vocabulary and advanced grammar acquisition through reading literature and writing.  Students will also continue to develop oral discussion skills.  This is an accelerated class appropriate for the highly motivated language learner.  A priority is placed upon more immersion in the target language.

French IV Honors

French IV Honors seeks to refine and enhance the four basic skills of world language learning.  It broadens vocabulary, increases written and oral fluency, deepens the knowledge of the mechanics of French through the study of literature pieces and French history, and expands cultural knowledge of the French-speaking world.

AP French Language
Credit:  1 (full-year)

Teacher Recommendation
French AP is designed for students who have mastered advanced French grammar and demonstrate commitment to academic excellence in the study of the French language in each of the four skills involved in world language learning: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Students will work through materials designed specifically for AP exam practice and preparation.

German I
Credit:  1 (full-year)

German I students are introduced to the basic skills of world languages with emphasis on vocabulary development and grammatical principles of the written and spoken language.  Cultural aspects of the German-speaking world are presented with the vocabulary and grammar study. 

German II

Spanish III Honors is an accelerated class appropriate for the highly motivated language learner.  Emphasis is placed upon many different areas, including Spanish grammar, conversational skills, reading and listening comprehension, and in depth studies of various aspects of Spanish culture.  A priority is placed upon seeking to refine and enhance conversational skills, while broadening vocabulary and grammatical structures. 

Spanish IV Honors

Spanish IV Honors seeks to refine and enhance concepts, including grammar techniques, conversational skills, reading and listening comprehension, and studies of various aspects of Spanish culture.  Vocabulary is broadened, written and oral fluency are increased, and an emphasis is placed upon the study of a variety of Spanish literature.

AP Spanish Language

AP Spanish Literature

AP Spanish Literature is a college level course where students study Spanish and Latin American literature from various genres.  Students read, discuss, and analyze all texts in Spanish.  Special emphasis is placed on preparing students for the College Board AP Spanish Language test administered in May.
