Visual Art

NOTE:  All art lab classes require fees for class project presentation.

Visual Art I
Grade Level: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th   
Credit:   1 (full-year)
Art I is a general laboratory course which explores and gives hands-on experiences in major areas of visual arts including drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, and textiles.  Two and three-dimensional design are explored in the various areas giving the student experiences in creativity, various media, and aesthetic appreciation.

Visual Art II
Grade Level:  10th, 11th, 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful Completion of Visual Art I, Portfolio, and
Teacher Recommendation
Students in this course are given the opportunity to explore the various art areas more in depth.  Students receive more advanced instruction in painting and drawing as well as an emphasis in three dimensional works such as sculpture, ceramics and textiles.  Techniques using more advanced skills will be taught and students will be encouraged to use these skills in hands-on projects.  Historical development is also included.  A portfolio of course work and independent study work is required.

Visual Art III
Grade Level:  11th or 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Art II, Portfolio, and
Teacher Recommendation
Students continue project work in two and three dimensional work with emphasis on design and independent study.  Students will be required to declare a major area of emphasis and develop an independent course of study in that area with instructor guidance.  An in-depth analysis of contemporary art is studied as part of art appreciation.  Portfolio will be maintained.

Visual Art IV
Grade Level: 12th 
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Portfolio, teacher approval, and Art III or approved advancement
This course emphasizes the development and exploration of advanced techniques in the student’s chosen medium.  Art IV is an advanced level art studio recommended for college art majors and minors as well as art institute students.  Large scale projects are expected using advanced techniques and applications.  Independent study in the studio area is a major part of this course.  Students are expected to keep a portfolio using peer and instructor critiques as the selection process.  A senior show of portfolio pieces will be necessary to exit the program.

Studio Art IV AP
Grade Level: 12th only
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Art III or approved advancement, Portfolio, and teacher approval
The Advanced Placement (AP) Studio Art Program is for highly motivated high school seniors to do college level work.  Students are to submit a portfolio of work, both original and in slide format, for evaluation at the end of the school year.  The AP Studio Art candidates prepare their portfolios through organized AP instruction.  Two types of portfolios may be submitted:  2-D and Drawing.

History of Art AP
Grade Level:   10th, 11th, or 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Must be approved by Social Studies Department Chair & Art instructor
AP History of Art is designed to provide the same benefits to secondary school students as those provided by an introductory college course in art history.  The course provides an understanding and enjoyment of architecture, sculpture, painting, and other art forms within historical and cultural contexts.  No prior exposure to art history is required.  However, students who have completed or are currently enrolled in AP European History are encouraged to enroll.

Music

General Music
Grade Level: 9th thru 12th 
Credit: 1 (full-year)
General Music is a multi-cultural study of the role and importance of music in our daily lives.  Critical listening skills are developed as past, present, and future trends are studied and analyzed.

Chorus I - Freshman                                         
Grade Level: 9th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Recommend completion of feeder-school system    vocal music program or recommendation from voice teacher
Freshman Choir is a performance-oriented class for those ninth grade students with experience and/or special interest in vocal music.  Both contemporary and classical styles of choral literature are studied with an emphasis on fundamental development.

Chorus II - General
Grade Level:  9th thru 12th  
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Chorus is a developmental, performance-oriented course of study.  Students learn fundamentals of vocal tone production and breathing through study, exercises and related appropriate choral literature.  This literature, which may be sacred or secular, represents a variety of styles and periods.

Chorus III - Concert Choir
Grade Level:  10th thru 12th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful audition or recommendation from chorus or voice instructor
Concert Choir is a performance-oriented class for those students with experience and/or special interests in vocal music.  Both contemporary and classical styles of choral literature are studied with an emphasis on the proper fundamentals of singing.  Freshmen may audition with teacher recommendation during the first 4 days of school.

Chorus IV - Women’s Chorale
Grade Level:  10th thru 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful audition or recommendation from Voice teacher

Music Theory Advanced Placement
Grade Level:  11th or 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Choral or Band teacher recommendation
Music Theory is designed for the music student who is interested in pursuing a career in music and/or majoring in music.  Beginning with a review of the fundamentals of musical notation, the course will include the study of music vocabulary, chord structure, key signatures, harmony, complex rhythms and other music reading skills in preparation for college music theory.  This music theory course will also emphasize the student’s development in the areas of sight singing & ear training.  Students will be learning skills that are taught at a college freshman level of music theory.  

Band I - Freshman    
Grade Level: 9th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Completion of feeder-school’s Instrumental music
program or recommendation of band director
Freshman Band is a performance-oriented class in which technical skills are expanded and fine-tuned.  The class is co-curricular, involving rehearsals and performances outside the school day.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Freshman Band members. 

Band II - Concert     
Grade Level: 10th, 11th, and 12th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Freshman Band, or the recommendation of the high school director
Concert Band is a performance-oriented class in which concert music is rehearsed throughout the year with an emphasis on the development of proper individual musicianship.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Concert Band members.

 Band III - Symphonic                                         
Grade Level:  10th, 11th, and 12th
Credit: 1 (full-year)
Successful audition or upon recommendation  of  Band director
Symphonic Band is an advanced, performance-oriented class in which concert music is rehearsed throughout the year.  Students are engaged in an intensive study of ensemble musicianship and participate in an expanded performance schedule, including Fall preparation for mid-state clinic band auditions and spring preparation for solo and ensemble festival.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Symphonic Band members.

Band IV – Percussion
Grade Level:  9th – 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of middle-school band or recommendation of high school director.
Percussion Class is a performance oriented class, addressing the fundamental development of percussion techniques.  The instructional focus is physical skill development, leading to improved reading skills and improved overall musicianship.  Participation in Marching Band is required of all Percussion Class participants.

 Orchestra  – String Ensemble
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Recommend completion of feeder-school’s instrumental strings program or recommendation of the high school orchestra director
Strings development curriculum is coordinated with the National Standards for Music Education and with the Tennessee State Requirements for Instrumental Music Education.  The class is a developmental performance class.    The band, choral, and orchestra directors will select brass, woodwind, percussion, and vocal students to participate in a full orchestra as needed. 

Theatre Arts

Theatre Arts I
Grade Level: 9th thru 12th 
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Theater Arts I is an overview of all facets of theater with the intent to develop a general knowledge of theater history, literature, and technical theater.  The first semester is mainly textbook reading and classroom work.  The second semester begins more involvement in theatre through individual and group performances.

Theatre Arts II
Grade Level: 10th thru 12th 
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Theatre Arts I
Theatre Arts II is designed for the serious theatre student.  Skills acquired in Theater Arts I will be expanded and strengthened.  The course is heavily production and performance-based, though play analysis is strongly emphasized.

Theatre Arts III
Grade Level: 11th and 12th  
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Theatre Arts II and  Audition with
Teacher Recommendation
This course is designed for advanced students to polish their theater specialty, such as technical theater, movement, acting, directing, or play-writing.  Theatre Arts III is heavily production and performance based, though play analysis is strongly emphasized.  Auditions are required for entrance into this course.

Theatre Arts IV
Grade Level: 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Theatre Arts III and
Teacher Recommendation                      
The Theatre Arts IV student is headed toward a post secondary study in the performing arts.  The student will study all facets of theater on a level which will prepare him/her for college or professional work.  Areas of intense training include analysis, design, acting, directing, and any particular area of study the student values.

 

Wellness and P.E.

Two (2) credits of JROTC may substitute for the Lifetime Wellness graduation requirement and three (3) credits of JROTC may substitute for American Government. Only three credits of physical education including Lifetime Wellness may be earned in four years.

Lifetime Wellness                                             
Grade Level:  9th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Required for graduation or 2 years JROTC
Lifetime Wellness is a course in which the students receive basic instruction in personal fitness and related activities, nutrition, mental health, disease prevention and control, substance use and abuse, sexuality and family life, safety and first aid, and wellness training for a lifetime.

Physical Education II
Grade:  10th, 11th, & 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Lifetime Wellness
This course is designed to develop a student’s level of proficiency in a specific individual or dual sport and team sports.  Total fitness will also be developed through non-competitive educational gymnastic activities including aerobic and anaerobic activities.

Weights & Kinesiology
Grade:  10th – 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of Lifetime Wellness
This course is designed to enhance physical fitness of students through agilities, running, and weights.

 
JROTC

The JROTC program is designed to teach high school students the value to leadership, and service to community, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment, while instilling self-esteem, teamwork, and self-discipline. JROTC is NOT a recruitment tool for the military. The primary focus is to motivate students to be better citizens.

JROTC I
Grade Level:  9th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Leadership Education and Training I - JROTC is a course in which the student receives basic instruction in leadership development, drill and ceremonies, first aid, American Citizenship and history, physical fitness, and map reading. 

JROTC II
Grade Level:  10th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of JROTC I
Leadership Education and Training II - JROTC advances to the intermediate study level of those subjects learned in JROTC I with more in-depth study of methods of instruction, positive self-concept, development of managerial skills, and history of the Army.

JROTC III  
Grade Level:  11th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of JROTC I & II
Leadership Education and Training III - JROTC is more intense leadership training with applied problem-solving situations, increased study in the psychology of leadership, communication skills, and teaching skills.

JROTC IV
Grade Level: 12th
Credit:  1 (full-year)
Successful completion of JROTC I, II, and III
Leadership Education and Training IV - JROTC is advanced instruction in the role of the Army in support of national objectives.  Seniors are encouraged to develop their leadership and managerial skills, written communications techniques, human relations skills, and oral communications abilities
