TENNESSEE GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL

The State of Tennessee provides nine summer programs for gifted and talented high school students. These programs provide challenging and intensive learning experiences in these disciplines: Arts, Humanities, International Studies, Engineering, Math and Science, Prospective Teachers, Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage, Information Technology Leadership, and Agricultural Science.  Students in the tenth and eleventh grades who would like to participate in a challenging and high intensity program in one of the nine areas should obtain applications from www.state.tn.us./education.

SPECIFIC CRITERIA

 

  1. Nominees should rank in the top of their class in performance/capability.  (Top 10% is recommended).
  2. Nominees should be emotionally mature and evidence many of the characteristics of a gifted student including:

Ř      Curiosity; is a keen observer; thrives on complexity; gets involved.

Ř      Ability to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate; sees new relationships; is able to generate many alternatives;

Ř      Is self-initiated.

Ř      Ability to learn rapidly easily, and efficiently; retains and uses information.

Ř      Ability to express himself/herself in writing, orally, and/or in the arts.

Ř      Sense of humor.

Ř      Inquisitiveness; asks provocative questions.

Ř      Initiation of out-of-school learning experiences or projects.

  1. Students must include an official transcript in their application materials.  Honors, AP, or similar courses must be noted.
  2. Teacher and counselor recommendations are to be completed as indicated.

 

Completed applications are due to your counselor in December.

General Information on the Governor's Schools:

  • Length of Governor's school will be five weeks
  • Six hours of college credit will be offered
  • Students will receive grades for the college courses taken
  • Content will be more subject specific
  • Students will have the opportunity for exploring careers in their area of interest
  • Not all Governor's Schools will take place at the same time (the schedule will depend on the individual university's summer school calendar).

TN Governor's Schools

  1. The School for the Arts -  held on the Middle Tennessee State University campus in Murfreesboro - only 30 miles from Nashville and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center, the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, Cheekwood Fine Arts Center, and the world famous recording studios. www.mtsu.edu/~gschool
  2. The School for the Sciences -  held on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville - near the Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Tremont Environmental Center, and in the heart of TVA.
  3. The School for the Humanities -  held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin - in the center of West Tennessee’s rich heritage. This program celebrates the expression of who we are, what we believe and the power of ideas in creating shared communities.
  4. The School for International Studies - held on the campus of The University of Memphis - in Memphis - in the heart of Tennessee’s growing international corporate center on the banks of the Mississippi River - home to Federal Express, Holiday Inns, and Schering-Plough.
  5. The School for Scientific Exploration of Tennessee Heritage -  held on the campus of East Tennessee State University - in Johnson City - surrounded by the area where Tennessee’s history actually began and only a few miles from Jonesborough, the state’s oldest existing city.
  6. The School for Prospective Teachers -held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga - with access to schools and cultural attractions and events in the greater Chattanooga metropolitan area including the TN Aquarium, river attractions and festivals.
  7. The School for Engineering - held on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville - focuses on the importance of manufacturing as an integral part of the culture and economy of Tennessee.
  8. The School for Agricultural Science – held on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin - focuses on the importance of agriculture to the state and national economy. Emphasis on experimental learning and laboratory exercises related to the science of agriculture.
  9. The School for Information Technology Leadership – this school will be held on the campus of Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville – focuses on developing a complete business plan for an information technology-based business and enhancing student's knowledge of information technology and business leadership.
