Across the Board


June 16, 2008    

The Student Spotlight was shining brightly on 18 students or student groups during the regular monthly meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education meeting Monday night. In the Skills USA competition the following Page High students were recognized for a first place state finish: Greg Terry, Video Game Design; Stephanie Rossberger, Imaging Technology Design; Samantha Baker, Aerospace Flight Endurance; Justin Anderson and Greg Terry, Architectural Model; and Samantha Baker and Stephanie Rossberger, Agriculture and Biotechnology Design. These students are taught by Jimmy Baker.

 Page High also had several first place titles in the Future Farmers of America competition. Taylor Green, Kara Wilson, Julie Ozburn, Sarah Norman, Gina Locke and Thomas Mendl won for State Poultry Judging; Julie Ozburn won for FFA Dairy Entrepreneurship; Kara Wilson was named Middle Region President of FFA; and Doug Giles was named State Treasurer. Their teacher is Tommy Green.

 In athletics, Ian Chadwell, Centennial High School, won a State tennis championship. His coach is Brad Herrera.  Nicole Smith of Page High was the State Champion in the high jump and the long jump. Her coach is Pete Wade. From Independence High School, Kathy Kroeger won a State Championship in the 1600 meter race and the two mile run. Her coach is Luke Finley.

 Brentwood High students were honored for a number of athletic achievements. Ashley Hopmayer and Laura Stack are the TSSAA State Champions in Tennis Doubles. Their coach is Sherri Trussell. Roman Dent is the State Champ in Pole Vault and Triple Jump while Sean Kevern won first in the 1600 meter run and the 3200 meter. Their coach is Ronnie Seigenthaler.  The Brentwood  Boy’s Track Team brought home the State Championship trophy. Team members include Taylor Arnold, Ishmael Bangura, Jay Barnett, Ford Bell,  Wes Brown, Jeremy Coffey, Reuben Coopwood, Daniel Cope, Matt Cumbee, Roman Dent, Bryan Doster, Reggie Farmer, Ryan Gadsey, Jaun Garcia, Scott Greer, Avery Humphyrey-Daivs, Nathaniel Ives, Austin Johnson, Patrick Kellett, Sean Keveren, Clay Kosack, Kevin Lazas, Kurt Luetzow, William Naeser, Evan  Newport,  Taylor Overton, Brenton Pope, Robert Rice,  Dillon Seigenthaler, Will Steinbrecher, Matt Steinbrecher, Mattew Stovall, Cole Tischer, Jacob Towry  and Scotty Wild.

 

The Brentwood Boy’s Soccer Team also won a  TSSAA State Title. Team members include Andrew Coley, Jacob DeKornfeld, Davis Dermody, Brett Fromhold, Tomi Homonnay, Bradley Jacobs, Philip Jensen, Chris Kolts, Jordan Leedle, Chris Price, Danny Rayburn, Wes Robertson, Eric Bowen, Robby Dupuis, Cody Loggins, Jim McKay, Brandon Scott, Ryan Smith, Philip Bent, Brian Davis, Nick DeSalvatore, Chase Hargis, Nick Kolts, Taylor Levine, Michael Mansouri, Patrick Brooks, Matt Homonnay,  Tommy Kuttenkuller, Daniel McLaughlin, Powell Newbern, Kenny Ra, Austin Stuck and Michael Giordano. Their coach is Michael Purcell. 

 

Brentwood High’s lacrosse team won the State Championship. Their coach is  Chuck Catterton, and team members include Richard Alter, Amir Aschner, David Catterton, Matthew Cooper, Clayton Cothran, Chaise Crosslin, Keene Davidson, Sam Desalvatore, J.T. Feeney, Jacob Fredi, Patrick Gill, Alan Hardwick, Colin Hart, Porter Lockhart, Travis Long, Brandon Luckett, Cameron Mason, David McGuire, Reed McNamara, Grant Muller, Peter Raffanti, Mason Riley, Trevor Skiera, Jason Springer, Preston Stapp and Sam Wyatt.

 In new business, the Board:

  • Approved two policies on first reading: School Attendance Areas, Zoning and Nonresident Students; Credit Requirements for Graduation.
  • Approved a site based request for Fairview Middle to allow the extended use of an incomplete grade.
  • Approved the Power Mondays concept for high schools for next year.
  • Approved an agreement with the YMCA to operate after school care programs in many of the elementary schools.
  • Approved two church lease requests including one at Centennial High and one at Hunters Bend Elementary.
  • Approved the Tennessee Comprehensive Systemwide Plan for the district.
  • Approved the 2008-09 NCLB Consolidated Application Plan including Titles I-IV, IDEA and Pre-school and Carl Perkins Vocational Program Improvement.
  • Approved year end intra-category budget amendments.
  • Approved the 2008-09 capital budget.

 In other action, the Board:

  • Approved one policy on second reading: Interscholastic Athletics.
  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved a master list of field trip fees.
  • Approved a bus radio agreement.
  • Approved school open purchase orders and accounts payable.
  • Approved the WCEA/WCBE contract for the 2008-09 school year.
  • Approved the teen leadership course.
  • Approved the SRO Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Approved management personnel.

 The next regular meeting of the WCBE will be Monday, August 18, 2008, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the administrative complex. The Board will not meet in July.
