BUDGET UPDATE

On Thursday afternoon, we met with the budget committee for their second review of our 2008-09 General Purpose School fund budget request and Capital Request.  In earlier meetings, both the education and budget committees of the commission recommended approval of our Central Cafeteria and Extended School Program Fund budgets. Ms. Holman presented the most recent revenue status for the current and upcoming year, and the budget as originally approved by the board in March would need less that a penny on the tax rate.  The budget committee recommended the amount representing the difference between a no property tax increase to the budget be taken from the bottom line.  It was discussed that if additional revenue materialized as we continue through the process, the amount taken away from the budget could be added back at a later date.  The committee also recommended that our capital budget be revisited by the board, prioritizing items to determine if the amount could be lowered from the amount originally requested.  We will discuss these recent developments either at the board meeting Monday or at our next work session.  The committee was appreciative of the budget that we presented and our efforts to work with them on a no property tax increase goal.  If you have any question, please call me or Budget Director Leslie Holman.

FRESHMEN ACADEMY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BEGINS

The first of our Freshmen Academy professional development sessions was held this week for teachers and administrators at Franklin High School with the Consultant from the Daggett Group.  This is the first of six such opportunities taking place this summer for our high schools to gain information and understanding about ways to better address the needs of our 9th grade students.

CROCKETT TEACHER HONORED

Crockett Elementary teacher Thomas Jeter is being honored by Land’s End in their ‘Teachers Light the Way’ national award program, which recognizes educators who go above and beyond teaching children, offering inspiration, guidance and encouragement for students, schools and community.   Land’s End recognized 45 teachers in the US from 5,000 essay entries.  Mr. Jeter was awarded Honorable Mention and received a beautiful crystal lighthouse and a Land’s End gift card.  He was nominated by Crockett parent, Ann Roebuck.
