School
History Fairview Elementary School opened in August, 1962
with an enrollment of 533 students in grades 1-8. The school was built
to fill an existing need for a comprehensive consolidated elementary
school in the western part of Williamson County. It united Triangle, New
Hope, and Fairview Schools. In 1971, grades 7 and 8 were moved to the
high school and in 1972, a Kindergarten program was implemented. Due to
continued growth in the area, the 6th grade was transferred to Fairview
Middle School in 1982 and the 5th grade in 1988. The "Hawks" mascot was
designed in the fall of 1997 and has become the focus of building pride
in our school community and facility. In August 2000, Westwood
Elementary School was opened due to increased enrollment. In the fall of
2001, the 5th graders returned to the elementary school.
Community
Quaint, quiet, convenient, and small town atmosphere are just a few
words that immediately come to mind when we think of Fairview. Located
in the vicinity of Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin, Dickson, and Spring
Hill - we are a short commute to almost anywhere in middle Tennessee.
Bowie Nature Park is the largest city operated park in the United States
with a glorious 850 acres and numerous lakes to enjoy. Bicycling,
horseback riding, fishing, running, and walking can be enjoyed every day
of the year. The community raised over $100,000 to build and construct
the Treehouse Playground, which is handicap accessible, and is located
near the entrance to the park. With the proposed I-840, Fairview expects
to grow and prosper from the first exit on the interstate. The city and
community are dedicated to monitor grow in order to retain our present
small town atmosphere
Parent/Teacher Conferences
A formal conference schedule takes place during the first nine weeks of
school. Additional conferences are held, by appointment, upon request.
This year our goal is 100% participation in parent, teacher conferences.
We would like to let parents know the results of our reading assessments
and get their input on reading goals for their child. We also plan to
involve the child in conferences where it is appropriate.
Parent Support Organization
Fairview Elementary has a very dedicated and active PTO. They promote
Breakfast with Santa, an annual Hawk Walk, and an evening encompassing
an auction, entertainment, food and fun. Monies earned from these
endeavors have purchased a PA system for assemblies and programs, an
outdoor classroom, gymnastic mats, golf equipment, grade level reading
centers, hand-held radios, assisting with the renovation of the front
lobby and upgrading the library. The technology department has
also benefited with the purchase of computers and a Promethean lab set
up. These endeavors have helped FES more efficiently meet the
needs of our students. The PTO is very active in assisting teachers,
scheduling parent work nights, recognizing teacher efforts through
National Teachers Week, National Education Week, and Teacher
Appreciation Day. After school clubs are offered to students both
semesters. Music, drama, art, chess, Spanish, and dance are some
of the activities that take place. A bus is also provided by the
PTO to deliver students home following these activities. A
kindergarten “kookout” takes place prior to the beginning of classes for
the little ones. Parents meet and are introduced to the school at
this event. PTO meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each
month.
Special Programs
FES is a school that focuses heavily on literacy for ALL students.
Several reading centers are located throughout the building where
students can enjoy reading alone, with a buddy, or with a group. Reading
Recovery, a program sponsored by Title I, is offered to first graders.
This is an individualized program that teaches students to become
independent readers and writers. A full time reading coach works with
teachers and students focusing on literacy growth. A math coach
serves the school in the same way. 4-H, Destination Imagination,
and after school enrichment clubs are also offered to FES students.
Library/Media Center
FES Library/Media Center is staffed by a library media specialist and a
library assistant. An average of 550 students (Pre-K – 5th grade ) per
week uses the library. The entire media center is computerized. Students
are able to search for books and information on computer terminals. The
AR program provides immediate feedback to students. Services include the
following: scheduled and open check out times for all classes,
storytelling, book fairs, video programs, technology support, and
internet access.
Academics
FES, currently has 29 classrooms. This includes four Early
Childhood programs and two pre-kindergarten classes. Education at FES
focuses on meeting the needs of each individual child. The use of
developmentally appropriate practices allows teachers to meet the needs
of each child at his/her level and implement individual growth plans
that help each child reach his/her full potential. Academics are
supported and enhanced by a student support services department, Reading
Recovery, music, art and a physical education program. A
counselor, computer lab, and fully staffed media program support student
needs.
Tutoring
We have a YMCA child care program that provides parents with child care
and tutoring (if needed) prior to and after school hours. Our program
runs from 6:00 am to 6:00 PM each weekday.
Our PTO also offers in school Reading assistance and after school
tutoring, including bus transportation for those who need it.
Life Skills
We have a full time counselor. who meets regularly with each classroom
to teach and reinforce skills such as group dynamics, problem solving,
anger management, and self esteem. Small groups meet throughout the year
addressing specific common concerns. The counselor is also available to
work individually with students and to meet with and support parents and
teachers. A part-time social worker and behavioral specialist also
support our students and their families.
Special Education Services
A number of special education programs are offered through Fairview
Elementary’s student support services department. The program provides
consultation, inclusion, support help sessions, and full instruction in
math, reading, and language arts. Early Childhood classes provide
comprehensive and inclusion services to 3, 4, and 5 year old children
who qualify for this program. Students enrolled in our gifted program
receive service within the general education classroom with the help of
our gifted consultant. Extension opportunities are offered in a variety
of ways. Related services include speech and language therapy,
occupational therapy, and physical therapy. A school social worker is
available for consultation and support when needed.
Related Arts
FES strongly believes that physical education is an essential component
in the total development of all children. Certified physical education
teachers expose students to many types of activities designed to
increase each child's endurance, strength, coordination, sportsmanship
and self-esteem. FES participates in the Cooper Institute's FitnessGram
program and tests students in grades 1 - 5 two times each year.
An active art program that concentrates on exploring different
techniques of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpting and creating
crafts in a studio setting is offered at FES. The student artists use
several different media including watercolor, tempura paint, craypas,
clay, chalk, charcoal, markers, and more.
Art lessons integrate with the classroom curriculum to provide
an additional way to learn. This curriculum provides students with
experience in different artistic styles and movements.
FES also offers a developmentally appropriate music program that focuses
on music appreciation, enjoyment, reading, writing, and singing.
Early grades are introduced to musical symbols and icons and given
opportunities to explore their own voices, dance, play certain
instruments, and learn many children’s songs-primarily folk songs.
Upper grades continue to use their voices as they learn more advanced
music reading skills and begin writing their own short songs and
melodies. They begin to study various styles of music and learn
about their importance in history and today’s society. The music
curriculum is based upon the guidelines set forth by the Music
Educator’s National Conference.
Partnerships
FES believes that we can be more effective when we involve the community
to help us provide learning experiences. We are committed to working
with area business and civic organizations to provide “real world”
support for our students and to provide opportunities for FES students
to contribute to their community.
