School History
Heritage Middle School began in August, 2000, temporarily housed in
Bethesda Elementary and Page Middle School. Under the leadership of
its first principal, Paula Pulliam, construction of the HMS building
was completed and opened its doors on January 5, 2001.
Heritage Middle School is nestled in a valley in historic southern
Williamson County. Located within minutes of Saturn and easily
accessible to both Franklin and Nashville, this area has seen
tremendous growth during the past five years. Residents of this area
enjoy convenient access to municipal areas as well as the rural
charm preserved in the Thompson Station community.
Heritage Middle School shares a campus with Heritage Elementary
School and the Williamson County Parks and Recreation Department.
Parent Support Organization
The Heritage Middle PTO is active in many aspects of school life
from volunteering in classrooms to fundraising to holding a voting
seat on the building leadership team.
Library/Media Center
The Library Media Center is open daily from 7:15 until 2:45 for
student use. Equipped with 21 network computers and adjacent to the
computer lab, the library is a great research tool for the HMS
student body.
Academics
Heritage Middle School utilizes a team teaching model to provide its
students instruction in language arts, mathematics, science and
social studies. Additionally, through related arts offerings,
students are exposed to art, physical education, life skills,
general music, world language, drama, band, creative communication,
and media skills in nine-week intervals to further enhance their
educational experience. The Heritage Middle staff implements
diversified instruction techniques including cooperative learning
groups, hands-on class activities, tiered assignments, high-level
questioning, problem-based learning, flexible grouping and
independent study to meet the learning profile and interests of
every learner. By using this model, all students are challenged at
the rate and degree of complexity that matches their individual
needs.
Special education students are served inclusively with the special
education staff working cooperatively with general educators to
provide support, modifications, and adaptations. Students who are
certified as intellectually gifted are served both inclusively and
in small group situations by a gifted consultant several times each
week.
STARS
STARS is led by faculty members and the STARS student executive
council. This group supports students in making lifestyle decisions
and refraining from the use of drugs and violence.
Athletics
Baseball, softball, wrestling, football, soccer, track, cross
county, cheerleading, dance team, volleyball, tennis, and golf.
