School History
Opened in the fall of 2002, the $24 million Ravenwood High School
(250,000 square feet) boasts 51 classrooms, 7 computer labs, 10 science
labs, a TV production facility, band and choral rooms, art rooms,
counseling center, state-of-the art media center, full production
theater with seating for 450, practice gymnasium, full-size gymnasium,
outdoor football stadium, soccer, baseball, and softball fields, tennis
courts, cafeteria, retail center and bank. Ravenwood opened with
32 teachers, 7 staff and approximately 540 students.
Ravenwood High School is
named after the historic family home of James Hazard Wilson II and
Emeline Wilson. Construction began on “Ravenswood” soon after
their marriage in 1821 and was completed in 1825. It was named
after Sam Houston, the best man at their wedding, whom the Indians
referred to as The Raven. (Sam Houston was Congressman, State
Attorney General and Governor of Tennessee. He was the military
hero of the battle of San Jacinto, which won the Republic of Texas its
independence from Mexico. He was the first President of the
Republic of Texas and later a US Senator and Governor of Texas.)
Ravenswood, Oak Hall, and Inglehame mansions, all built by James Hazard
Wilson, remain among the finest antebellum homes in Williamson County.
Community
Brentwood is a suburban area located in Williamson County, adjacent
to metropolitan Nashville. The City of Brentwood, incorporated in
1969, is a residential community of over 23,000 residents, many of whom
are business and professional people employed in the greater Nashville
area. Brentwood encompasses an area of 35.5 square miles. It
provides a variety of parks and recreational programs to meet the needs
and interests of local residents. “State of the art” parks and greenways
(390 acres), along with tennis courts, multi-purpose fields,
bikeway/jogging trails, community playgrounds, and picnic shelters, are
a maintained by the city. Youth sports, swimming, tennis, and
soccer are available to all residents of the city. Historic Crockett
House, an amphitheatre, and a state of the art public library also
contribute to the family-oriented lifestyle of Brentwood.
School Mission
The mission of Ravenwood High School is to develop a community of
learners that cultivates the intellect, ability, and character of each
person within it.
Our Focus: Collaboration
The Ravenwood Staff believes that collaboration is the key to school
improvement and student achievement. Through curriculum teams, we
aspire to improve curriculum, instruction, assessment and culture
Curriculum teams meet twice weekly during the school day to focus on
student achievement.
Power Mondays are reserved
for Curriculum Teams, an activity that allows teachers to collaborate to
deepen their knowledge of subject matter, examine their teaching
practices, and consider methods to improve classroom practices.
Parent Support Organization
Ravenwood High School is supported by the Parent-Teacher Organization.
The PTO is divided into three subgroups: Athletics, Band, and
Academics. Additionally, freshmen and sophomore parent TEAMs (Together,
Everyone Achieves More) provide assistance to the students, staff, and
programs at Ravenwood.
Library/Media Center
The Media Center is open from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Monday through
Thursday and until 3:00 on Fridays. The Media Center at Ravenwood
strives to be an important part of the instructional program. By
providing the best possible resources, we hope to assist students and
staff.
Academic Paths
Ravenwood High School requires all students to have a plan that will
prepare them for post-secondary training in either a four-year college
or university or technical school.
Guidance/Counseling
The Ravenwood Counseling Center provides services to students focusing
on their needs in three areas of development: academic, career and
personal/social. Eight school counselors provide direct counseling
services to students individually and in support groups, facilitate
referrals to community support services, advise students on academic
planning, provide career guidance and network with postsecondary
schools. Our center maintains an up to date library of career and
post-secondary school information and is equipped with a computer lab to
assist students with college and career planning. The counseling
center staff includes seven professional school counselors, a secretary,
a registrar, and a STARS counselor.
STARS
Students Taking a Right Stand is a student assistance program dedicated
to helping students make healthy lifestyle choices and refrain from the
use of alcohol, other drugs, and violence. The STARS specialist is
on campus to offer support to students and their families who are
dealing with a variety of personal problems, including those related to
alcohol and other drugs. Students may be seen individually or may
participate in a small support group.
All RHS students are given
the opportunity to join the STARS Club by making a personal commitment
to abstain from the use of alcohol, other drugs, and violence.
STARS Club members may participate in educational and fun activities as
well as community service learning projects. The Student Executive
Council is a group of student leaders within the club.
The STARS office is located
in the counseling center in Room D210.
Athletics
Interscholastic sports programs are available in basketball, baseball,
football, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field and
