School History
Scales Elementary School
was opened in the fall of 1977. Scales originally served a student population in grades K-6. Currently, Scales serves the student enrollment in grades K-5. The students of Scales live primarily in a residential area west of Franklin Rd. The population and ethnic make-up of Scales is reflective of the community and is of an increasingly diverse cultural and social background. Scales’ leaders believe the school is an extension of the community guided by democratic principles, dedicated to enhancing the rights and privileges of citizens, and laying a foundation for leadership.

Before/After School Care
YMCA Fun Company - open from 7:00-8:00 AM and 3:30 - 6:00 PM.  Additional information may be obtained from a pamphlet in the school office.

Parent/Teacher Conferences
Parents will receive a report card each nine weeks. Parents who have questions should address their concern(s) with the teacher. The Board of Education has set two Parent Conference Days for 2005-06 - September 28, and March 24  In order to honor instructional time and planning time for students, all parent conferences are held by appointments only.

Parent Support Organization
Scales has a very active PTO, headed by Mrs. Lisa Butler. PTO sponsored functions include: Fiesta Night, Ice Cream Social, Invest Fest and the Arts Program

Special Programs
Accelerated Reader and S.T.A.R. are both used in addition to each classroom's reading program. Many exciting activities also take place throughout the school year. They include: Destination Imagination; Fiesta Night; Arts Festival; and the Fall Invest Fest.

Academics
Parents will receive a progress report each nine weeks. Parents who have questions should address their concern(s) with the teacher. Teachers will schedule a yearly conference. Parents requesting additional conferences should contact their child’s teacher to schedule an appointment. Conferences are by appointment only. Currently participating in Curriculum Alignment; the majority of teachers have received extensive training in innovative methods for Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts. Professional workshops include Windows on Math, AIMS, SUMS, Multiple Intelligences, Governor's Academy, Reading Renaissance, and Using Data to Drive Instruction.

Guidance
Scales’ Guidance program is directed by counselor, Peggy McNamee. Some of Mrs. McNamee's guidance activities include: parenting classes; super citizens; perfect attendance; mentoring program; and community partnerships.  She chairs the Character Education committee. Each month they spotlight a character word. 

Fine Arts
Students attend music, art, physical education, computer lab, and library classes on a regular basis
