School History
Walnut Grove, serving grades Pre-K-5, was established on August 23,
1990 with 400+ students. New Growth has led to an additional wing
being constructed during the summer of 2004. Walnut
Grove
Elementary School pride runs deep as it abounds
with 15 years of educational history.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
There are regularly scheduled conferences during the school year.
If you have questions concerning your child's progress, a
conference with your child's teacher should be made. Parents
receive a progress report during each nine weeks grading period with
Report Cards issued at the end of the nine weeks.
Parent Support Organization
This group of high energy parents will serve as leaders in special
interest activities, projects, events, etc. An elected board of
officers with an annual schedule of events and budget is established
each year. The PTA Executive Board meets monthly and is open to all.
Special Programs
Special programs offered at Walnut Grove are: S.T.A.R.S and Sunshine
Math. Accelerated Reader and S.T.A.R are both utilized to
complement each classroom’s reading program. Other programs include:
Jump Rope Club, Make A Difference Club (MADC), Spanish Club, Track
Club, Chorus, Good News Club, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts, Cub
Scouts and Brownies, and office helpers, grades 4-5.
Many exciting projects take place throughout the school year: Field
Day, Fifth grade Olympics, Book Fair, Rock-n-Roll Read-a-Thon, and
promotion for fifth grade.
Library/Media Center
Walnut Grove Library Media Center is a fully-automated Resource base
for all students and staff members. Open throughout each school day,
the LMC is staffed by a full-time library media specialist and
full-time library assistant to assist students and staff members.
Students visit the center individually, in small groups, or with
their class to check out books, conduct research, work on special
projects, engage in quiet reading, or a variety of other purposes.
Classes with younger students often attend story time in the LMC,
and all students learn about information access and evaluation.
Guidance
The school counselor is a vital part of the school staff. Mrs.
Hausman, our full-time counselor and Fred Robinson, part-time
counselor provide regular classroom guidance sessions on such topics
as getting along with others, accepting responsibility, study
skills, and test preparation. During the course of the year, small
group counseling is also offered for students experiencing any
problems.
Academics
Walnut Grove Elementary currently has 38 classrooms for
Kindergarten through 5th grade, one Early Childhood
Preschool classroom, and three student support services teachers.
We have a full time music teacher, a part time music teacher, one
media specialist, two full time physical education teachers and one
part time physical education teacher, two school counselors, one art
teacher, one part time art teacher, one .5 technology coach, one
part time gifted consultant, one full time reading specialist, and
one part time ESL teacher. The thirty-eight classrooms have
networked computers and LCD projectors. All of our classrooms
have interactive mimeo white boards. Our computer lab has thirty
networked stations and 2 mobile carts with laptops and one
interactive white board.
Special Education Services
Walnut Grove services include three full-time students support
service teachers and assistants, a full-time speech and language
therapist, a part-time gifted consultant, a part-time psychologist,
full-time reading specialist, and a part-time ESL teacher.
Walnut Grove utilizes an inclusion model to encourage the full
participation of all students in general education.
Fine Arts
Walnut Grove Physical Education Department focus on skill building, sportsmanship, rhythmic
activities, strategies of games, and sports as well as having an
intramural program. Music is provided for grades K-5 at
Walnut Grove. This program includes a student choir. Art
classes meet each day of the week for grades K-5. The success of
this program can be viewed all along our hallways as student art is
showcased for all to appreciate.
Extra Curricular Activities
Walnut Grove offers these organizations: Fifth Grade Olympics, Field
Day, Spanish Club, Jump Rope Club, Track Club, Chorus, Book Fair,
4H, Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub and Boy Scouts, Destination
Imagination, Make A Difference Club, Rock & Roll Read -A –Thon,
Office Helpers, and Family Fun Night.
