School
History Fairview Elementary School opened in August, 1962,
with an enrollment of 533 students in grades 1-8. The school was built
to fill an existing need for a comprehensive consolidated elementary
school in the western part of Williamson County. It united Triangle, New
Hope, and Fairview Schools. In 1971, grades 7 and 8 were moved to the
high school, and in 1972, a Kindergarten program was implemented. Due to
continued growth in the area, the 6th grade was transferred to Fairview
Middle School in 1982 and the 5th grade in 1988. In August, 2000,
Westwood Elementary School was opened due to increased enrollment.
Fairview Elementary and Westwood Elementary shared their location until
the new building for Westwood was completed. The completion date finally
came, and our new school opened after Winter Break in January 2001.
Community
Quaint, quiet, convenient, and small town atmosphere are just a few
words that immediately come to mind when we think of Fairview. Located
in the vicinity of Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin, Dickson, and Spring
Hill - we are a short commute to almost anywhere in middle Tennessee.
Fairview is proud to claim Bowie Nature Park which is the largest city
operated park in the United States. It has 850 glorious acres and
numerous lakes to enjoy. Bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, running,
and walking can be enjoyed every day of the year. The community rose
over $100,000 to build and construct the Tree house Playground, which is
handicap accessible, and located near the entrance to the park. With the
proposed I-840, Fairview expects to grow and prosper. The city and
community are dedicated to monitor growth in order to retain our present
small town atmosphere.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
A formal conference schedule coincides with the first nine weeks report
card. Additional conferences are held, by appointment, upon request.
Parent Teacher Organization
Westwood Elementary has a very active and dedicated Parent Teacher
Organization (PTO). They promote parent connection and involvement. The
PTO is very active in assisting teachers, scheduling parent work nights,
recognizing teacher efforts through National Teachers Week, National
Education Week, and Teacher Appreciation Day. The also help raise money
for our school through the collection of box tops and food labels, Fall
Festival, the Santa Breakfast, and many other fundraisers throughout the
year. PTO meetings are held regularly throughout the school year.
Special Programs
Westwood Elementary offers a variety of special programs. We are
involved in the Accelerated Reader Program that encourages students with
a yearly point challenge. We have Reading Recovery, which is an
individualized program that teaches students to become independent
readers and writers. This program is funded by Title I and offered to
first graders. For the past five years, we are privileged to have a
Reading Specialist who works with small groups in developing reading
fluency, skills, and habits. Westwood offers an afterschool Reading
Clinic that meets four times a week to help improve students’ reading
and writing fluency and comprehension. We also have Junior Achievement
and the Summer Camp Program sponsored by the YMCA.
Library/Media Center
WES Library/Media Center is staffed by a library media specialist and a
library assistant. Our entire media center is computerized. Students are
able to search for books and information on computer terminals. Our
services include the following: scheduled and open check out times for
all classes, storytelling, an annual book fair, video programs,
encyclopedias, and internet access.
Academics
WES, an accredited elementary school by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools, currently has 22 classrooms for grades K-5, three
Learning Lab classrooms, and two Reading Recovery classrooms. We also
have a music teacher, an art teacher, a gym for physical education
classes with a full and a part time teacher, a library-media center, and
a guidance office. Education at WES focuses on meeting the needs of each
individual child. The use of developmentally appropriate practices
allows teachers to meet each child’s needs and implement a growth plan
for him.
Tutoring
WES offers an after school Reading Clinic. This tutoring program usually
begins in the late fall. Three to four teachers tutor students in grades
2-5 after school four days a week. The tutoring is centered on reading
and writing. The goal of this program is to help strengthen reading
fluency and skill mastery and further writing development.
Guidance
Westwood Elementary has a full time counselor that meets regularly with
each classroom to teach and reinforce skills; such as group dynamics,
problem solving, anger management, and self-esteem. The counselor meets
throughout the year with small groups addressing specific common
concerns. The counselor is also available to work individually with
students and to confer with and support parents and teachers.
Special Education Services
We have a number of special education programs at Westwood Elementary.
Our Extended Learning Lab program provides consultation, inclusion,
support help sessions, and full instruction in math, reading, and
language arts. Students enrolled in our gifted program receive services
within the regular education classroom and independent small groups with
the help of our gifted consultant. Related services include speech and
language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.
Specials
Westwood Elementary strongly believes that physical education is an
essential component in the total development of all children. Certified
physical education teachers expose students to many types of activities
designed to increase each child's self-esteem, endurance, strength,
coordination, and sportsmanship. WES participates in the Cooper
Institute's Fitness Gram program and tests students in grades 1 - 5 two
times each year. There is a WES jump rope team and runner’s club
available to our students.
