    Country Studies
    These volumes are a continuing series of books prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. Most books in the series deal with a particular foreign country, describing and analyzing its political, economic, social, and national security systems and institutions, and examining the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors.

    With the end of the century fast approaching, you may be looking for a site that will give you the highlights of what happened in any given decade. This is it. This is a collection of timelines, color coded by categories such as Science & Technology, Politics, Culture, Religion, and War. A good starting point for "decade" projects. Oh... and it covers more than just the 20th century-- we're talking 3,000 years of world history!
  • Atlapedia Online
    Here's a great source to help you get started on a country report, or to help supplement the information you'll find in your school library. Altapedia combines the features of an encyclopedia and an atlas. You'll find facts and statistics about the country you're studying, as well as political and physical maps.
     
     
    E-Conflict World Encyclopedia
    Designed to eliminate conflict by promoting cultural awareness, this site will help you find information about the economy, government, defense, geography and people of any country.  Each country's entry also includes a link to a current news source for that location.
     
    How Far Is It?
    This service uses the University of Michigan Geographic Name Server and a supplementary database of world cities to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies). It also provides a map showing the two places. Very cool!
     
    Visit the National Parks by State
    This page from the National Parks Service's website allows you to select a state from a map of the U.S. and click on it to find out what parks are located there. Navigation buttons at the bottom of the page will connect you to the Park Service's homepage where you'll find other choices.

    Each of the following sites contain very impressive collections of links to information about the history and art of ancient civilizations-- including important people, places and events, and art, music, literature, daily life, and culture. You might find these long lists a bit overwhelming, and some of the linked sites may not be that easy for 6th graders to understand, but the author has done a good job of telling you a little about each one to give you an idea whether or not it's what you are looking for. Give yourself lots of time-- you're bound to find something of interest!
    Pyramids: The Inside Story
    Ever dreamed of visiting the pyramids of Egypt? Well, here's your chance for a "virtual" tour. This PBS Nova Online Adventure includes maps, facts and cross sections of the pyramids and the Sphinx, and interviews with archaeologists. Hint: the "Table of Contents" is a good place to start!
     
    The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
    We all know there's a list of "seven wonders" but most of us can't remember what they are!  Find out here.  There are also lists here of modern wonders, natural wonders, and the answers to some frequently asked questions.
