Music

Experiencing music

Students are given opportunites to listen to and discuss a varied repertoire of musical styles and genres.

Rhythms

Students are taught simple rhythmic patterns using the Kodaly method.  These patterns are building blocks to learning to read music.  This is the area of study that has been found to improve mathematical  functions in the brain.

Melody

Students are exposed to new songs and given opportunities to sing and echo new melodic patterns.  Folk songs make up a large portion of melodic learning.  The Orff instruments are occasionally used in order to experience more melodies and play them.

Composing Music.

The upper grades take rhythms given to them and create melodies for them and write lyrics to go with the rhythms and melodies.

Lessons may include:

Singing

Playing Instruments

Literature that ties in with the songs we learn

Writing lyrics and rhythms

Rhythm sticks

Journaling

Dance

Listening pieces

Acting- ( skits that are connected to operas or musicals)
