Scot Shupe visits FES 3rd, 4th and 5th graders

Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades enjoyed the reptile presentation by Scot Shupe and his “World of Reptiles”, from the Kentucky Reptile Zoo . The reptile visitors included  a Boa Constrictor, Burmese Python, Kimono Dragon, a tortoise, a King Snake, a Legless Lizard, a Tyco Lizard, a spiky Manta- Turtle from the Amazon River of Brazil,  and an Australian Children’s Snake. Students learned that reptiles are vertebrates and are cold blooded.  Students learned about common reptile adaptations such as camouflage and regeneration. Shupe reminded students that most snakes are helpful in keeping down the population of rodents and poisonous snakes, but to be safe around snakes by walking away from them.  The program ended with a Reptile Test…for the principal, Joan Tidwell.  She nervously agreed to take the test in exchange for thirty extra minutes of reading from each student.  The test was to hold a Children’s Python Snake for five seconds.  Mrs. Tidwell passed the test and commented, “It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be”.
