Fairview Elementary First Grade

Language Arts

Balanced Literacy is the main component of our Language Arts program. The goal of a Balanced Literacy program is for children to become independent readers and writers who can go on to learn more and express ideas in their own way. Balanced Literacy is a program which includes read aloud, interactive reading and writing, shared reading and writing, guided reading and writing, and independent reading and writing. Through a balance of these activities, reading and writing skills are modeled and explored. The goal is for children to become independent readers and writers.

Science

Our foundation of science is based on the Science Kits from Carolina Biological. We get four kits a year for 6 weeks each. The themes explored in the kits include Comparing and Measuring, Weather, Organisms and Balls and Ramps. Through hands-on experiments, students learn to predict, graph, and collect data. Along with the kits we also teach magnets and the solar system.

Social Studies

In first grade, students learn about their community and their responisibility as a citizen. Learning about social skills, careers, and transportation are some of the lifelong skills taught through these units of study.

Mathematics

Learning and applying basic skills of addition and subtraction are two of our main goals in math. Understanding tens and ones, money, time, fractions and units of measurement are basic principles of our math program.

All children can learn and succeed, but not on the same day, or in the same way.
