Strep Throat Information
The bacteria are easily spread through respiratory droplets such as when coughing or sneezing. Early recognition and treatment will prevent the spread of the illness. And, as always, good hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of any illness. To help control the spread of strep throat, please be aware if your child complains of any of the following symptoms:

SIGNS/SYMPTOMS OF STREP THROAT:

  1. Red, sore throat with/without white patches on tonsils
  2. Swollen lymph nodes in neck
  3. Fever
  4. Headache
  5. Nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain
  6. Rash

DIAGNOSIS OF STREP THROAT:

Strep throat is only diagnosed by a positive throat culture. This can be done at the doctor’s office. First, a rapid strep test is done (10-20 minutes). If it is negative, then the physician will probably do a throat culture (which takes 24-48 hours). A negative throat culture suggests a viral infection, which does not need antibiotic treatment.

TREATMENT OF STREP THROAT:

Your child’s doctor will prescribe an antibiotic.   All of the medication must be taken to effectively treat and eradicate the bacterium.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL:

Your child may return to school after being on antibiotics for 24 hours, and when he/she feels better.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all students health
