We know that one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the love of reading.  Children who are good readers have skills that help them do better in every aspect of school.

Our school district has developed a suggested list of good literature for the grade levels.  The lists are divided in ways that provide flexibility for each child.

Thank you for your support, and please encourage reading all summer.  Your child will benefit in school and life by being a lifelong reader.

Following is a letter to librarians from Riley C. Darnell, Tennessee Secretary of State:

January 5, 2006

I am pleased to announce that the Tennessee State Library and Archives, a division of the

Tennessee Department of State, is sponsoring the eighteenth annual statewide Summer

Reading Program for children. This program is designed to improve reading skills and

encourage the joy of reading.

This year’s theme is “Jungle Tales: Hiss, Rumble & Roar”. In addition to learning about jungle

animals from around the world through library programs described in this manual, thousands of

participating children will have an opportunity to read individually and to expand their knowledge

during the summer months. Reading is fundamental to the pursuit of every child’s dream, and

the local public library holds the key to a true understanding of freedom and civic responsibility.

I join the Tennessee State Library and Archives staff and the Regional Library System in wishing

you the greatest summer to date, and I want to thank you all for your continued interest in the

improvement of the libraries in your communities.

Sincerely,

Riley C. Darnell

Secretary of State

To see a copy of the manual: “Jungle Tales: Hiss, Rumble & Roar”, please contact the FES Librarian @ 472-4384 or the Fairview Public Library @ 799-0235.

Lists are created for students preparing to come into that grade level.
