Crazy weather ... Temperatures ranged from the 30s to the 50s and back and forth.  Winds ranged from 20 to 40 mph.  It rained once.  It snowed twice!  The team from Miami went crazy when they witnessed snow.  Most tents were destroyed by the wind.  One page of shot put results got blown into the next county and was never found.  The jumps were against the
wind.  The pole vault and high jump were nearly impossible.

Crazy meet ...  I have never witnessed a slower meet.  The first event began at 8:30 AM.  The last event had not started by
8:30 PM.  It seemed like forever between races.  The meet took a 90-minute lunch break.  I can't remember the last time my team left a meet early but we left this one without seeing the 3200 and 4x4.  Only 11 boy's teams stayed for the 4x4, the other 26 had gone home.

Crazy trip ...  We took 34 boys, the biggest group I've ever taken on a trip.  We got plastered by rain every minute on the way down.  We saw several wrecked cars, slow traffic, etc.  We got to the hotel at 11:45 Eastern.  The hotel's computer had crashed and all reservations had been lost.  We got our rooms at 12:45 AM.  We left the hotel at 7:30 AM and then endured a 12-hour meet.  We got home at 11:45 Central ... then set our clocks forward one hour.

Four boys were late for the 7:00 AM meeting on Saturday morning and were not allowed to participate.

I was proud of my team for enduring the weekend.

We entered two boys teams so that we could double our entries.

The meet featured 37 boy's teams and about the same number of girl's teams.  There were teams from Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama, and Georgia.    We finished 12th in the team standings, scoring 20
points. We placed in four events.

Despite the weather, sprint and hurdle times were very impressive.

John Hewitt was the talk of the meet.  To see a short white kid in the finals of the 200 in a meet of this caliber is odd enough ... but to see him blow away the field was incredible.  His time of 22.08* FAT (21.9 on the watch) is fantastic for a junior ...with the wind in his face on the curve ... and doing it so early in the season.

Antonio Murry ran the 800 in 2:06* and 2:05* in the second meet of his life. I believe he has the rare combination of talent and heart.  He passed four guys to take the lead in the 4x8.  He won his heat of the 800.  Stay tuned.

Alec Holler ran a better race in the 110 HH than the time indicates.  His blocks slipped (no one was allowed to hold blocks) and was forced to 11-step the first hurdle.  He still ran 15.98 FAT.  Later he ran a 41.00 FAT after spending 11 hours in the cold, windy conditions.

Thomas Sensing PRd in the shot, throwing 45'11* and placing 4th.  He has thrown over 48 several times in practice last
week.  Thomas won the scholar-athlete award and received a T-shirt.

Our 4x8 team of Juan Arboleda, Antonio Murry, Elliot Brown, and Ryan Williams was the our only other placer (8th).

Our 4x1 team of Trey Hardison, Todd Campell, John Hewitt, and Titus Hardemon had one poor exchange that kept them out of the finals (barely).

There was no 4x2 relay.  If there was, the meet might still be in progress.

All 34 guys had an important learning experience. With 35 first-year track athletes on our 45-man roster, we will experience lots of growing pains.

Special thanks to the parents (Bob and Glenda Brown, Bill and Beth Hewitt, and Mark Frohock) that drove, supervised, and endured our weekend.  I have no assistant coach, so parental involvement is very important.

So far, we have attended three extremely long, freezing-cold, track meets.  I look forward to the Scott Hartman Relays at Brentwood High School.  Running events will be held on Monday ... field events on Tuesday ... finals of running events on Thursday.  I've never attended a three-day meet before, it should be interesting.
