50-60 degrees, 15-25 mph winds
We were outscored in the field events 53-7 by Herrin. Thomas Sensing failed to place in both throws. Trey Hardison had sore shins and did not high jump. Of course, we always get blanked in the pole vault. These factors combined with Herrin's explosive performances put us "behind the 8-ball" before we ever got to the running events.
We dominated the running
events, outscoring Herrin 95-57, despite several missed
opportunities. Those missed opportunities included
...
1) We were expected to win the 4x2 (10 points!). Instead,
we had a stand-still exchange (#2), and a dropped-baton (#3).
2) Juan Arboleda was seeded to score 20 points in the distance
events but scored only 6, failing to place in the 800 and 1600.
This was largely due to the speed of the meet. Juan is
accustomed to coed meets that last 8 hours instead of 4 ...
there was simply not enough time to recover. In hindsight,
it was a mistake to attempt all three distance events.
3) John Hewitt was seeded to win the 100 but placed 4th. Two
sprinters from Herrin placed 1st and 3rd. The difference
between what was expected and what actually happened was 10
points.
4) We are still missing 10.8 sprinter, Titus Hardemon, who will
hopefully return this week.
5) We were missing freshman Jesse Hewitt who was sick. Jesse would have placed in both hurdles.

Positives ...
John Hewitt was a double winner, winning the 200 and 400.
We placed BOTH of our 4x1 teams, running 44.3 and 45.9.
Antonio Murry was incredible, running a personal record 2:00.8 to win the 800 despite windy conditions that seriously slowed down all runners in the lap-events. He also ran an excellent 52.8 4x4 split when everyone else was much slower than usual.
Our 3200 runners (Arboleda and Snyder) both ran personal records. Snyder later ran an impressive PR in the 1600.
Freshmen Johnathon Carter broke the 20'0 barrier in the long jump for the first time. He also anchored our 2nd-place freshmen 4x2 team.
Johnathon Haynes placed 3rd in the 400 with a very respectable 53.2 despite running the 4x2 five minutes earlier.

Congrats to Herrin Coach, Chad Lakatos. Chad is a former Harrisburg 400 Meter runner who placed 2nd and 3rd in the IHSA 400 back in 1991 and 1992. He ran the best 4x4 split of any runner I've ever coached (48.2) at the state meet in 1992. His performances as an athlete does not compare to what he has done as a track coach at Herrin High School in such a short time.

Overall this was a good trip. We traveled to another state, spent the night and took care of business much better than we had on previous trips to Georgia and Alabama. We had a chance to win but got beat by a team that performed better than we did. We should be hungry to redeem ourselves.
Next Meet: Tullahoma Mid-State Invitational, Saturday May 7. I wouldn't be surprised to see over 20 teams in attendance.
