3:30 temp 58 degrees, 10:15 temp 42 degrees; windy
This meet started at 3:30. All field events were
completed before starting the running events with the
exception of the 3200 that ran at 3:30. Therefore,
the running events began at 5:30 and finished at
10:15. For the second meet in a row, no pole vault
was held.
We were assigned LANE ONE for each and every running
event, each and every heat.
LaVergne was second in Region 3 last year (one of
Tennessee's four regions) and placed 12th in the
TSSAA State Meet, Class AAA. They returned the state
champion triple jumper.
Despite missing one of most important athletes, Trey
Hardison (LJ, TJ, HJ, 100), we were tied with LaVergne
going into the 4x4. Our mile relay, tired, cold,
and
sore, ran an inspired race to win the meet. Tonight
the Franklin Rebels became a team.
Junior, John Hewitt ran three personal records (in
lane one!), 10.9, 49.9, and 22.2 ... in March! Wow!
Senior, Alec Holler won both hurdles (15.7, 41.1),
placed 4th in the triple, and gave us the lead for
good in the 4x4 win. Alec scratched by one inch on a
40'9 triple jump.
Not very often does a track coach see the emergence of
a star. Tonight we saw Antonio Murry's coming out
party. Antonio, a star basketball player, came out
for track this week but told me he couldn't run in the
meet because he couldn't afford spikes for another
week. I told him I would buy him spikes if he would
run the 800 for us. Antonio ran 2:08.7, reeling in a
runner that had held a 40-meter lead. Antonio ran
this after only one practice. This was Antonio's first
track meet.
I was also encouraged by another basketball player,
Jamarcus Lee, running 12.0 and 23.9 in his first time
out of starting blocks.
Donta Brown was at the NCAA tournament and Nick Trama
was sore from a minor car wreck Thursday.
Juan Arboleda continues to struggle with a lingering
sore throat. He is going to the doctor this weekend,
hopefully.
I was thrilled to see Titus Hardemon running without
showing the effects of his hamstring injury. Titus
ran 11.3 in the 100 and a strong anchor leg in the
4x2. Our 4x2 team ran much better than their time
indicated. Our inexperience really shows up on our
4x2 exchanges.
Shannon Derricks had a PR in the LJ (19'1) and ran on
THREE first-place relay teams.
Todd Campbell ran on THREE first place relay teams.
Freshman Johnathon Carter had a PR in the 100 (11.5),
ran the first leg in both victorious sprint relays,
and placed 6th in the LJ.
Freshman Jesse Hewitt looked great in his first-ever
300 INT, running 47.3.
We have spring break this week and travel to
Clarksville Kenwood next Saturday.
