Franklin High School Driver’s Education
2009-2010
|
Instructors: Bill Boner Toby Ruth Marshall Winkler |
Franklin High School offers Driver’s Education courses to any incoming 9th
grader. The course consists of two parts: 30 classroom hours of
instruction and 6 individual hours of field driving experience.
Students will receive ˝ academic course credit for
successful completion of the Driver’s Education course. Students are not
required to be students at Franklin High School in order to enroll, but must
be available for all hours required by the instructor for completion of the
course. Any student who is
involved in extra-curricular activities should plan to take the course at a
time when their extra-curricular activity does not conflict with the 30 hours
of classroom instruction. Attendance for all 30 hours is mandatory and
parents should schedule appointments to avoid conflicts with the course dates
provided. Students are not
required to have their permit in order to participate in the driver’s
education course; however, it is strongly recommended that the student obtain
their permit before their 6 hours of field driving experience. Also, we
do recommend that parents do some driving with their student prior to driving
with the teacher. Class sizes may vary
depending on how much time the instructor has to complete the course.
Enrollment in a class is
done on an instructor to instructor basis and each individual instructor will
only begin taking students for the next class on the dates provided and
continue until all available spots are filled or the class begins. At
that time, the teacher will notify the front office and the webmaster that
the class is full and no more students will be taken until enrollment begin
for the next class. |

Frequently Asked Questions 1. How
old do you have to be to take Driver’s Education at Franklin High School? In the state of TN, a
student can be 14 and legally take Driver’s Education and drive in the car
with the instructor. At FHS it is
required that you be at least a freshman (or incoming freshman during the
summer courses.) 2.
How much does the course cost? The cost for Driver’s Ed at Franklin High School is
$300. Checks are made payable to
FHS. This is to be turned in with your
application to the instructor. 3. When
are courses offered? Courses are offered on an instructor to instructor
basis. This means that there is no
specific time that a course is required to meet. The instructors here at FHS have gotten together
and created times and dates for the entire school year. These times and dates can be found listed
above. 4.
When can you sign up? This depends on the teacher as well. Be sure to pay close attention to
announcements and only contact the instructor who is teaching the next course to avoid confusion and delay in
registration. You will find enrollment
dates for available courses listed above.
Please wait until those dates to begin signing up for courses. 5.
When is the money and application due to the instructor? It is best to complete the application and return it
with your check to the instructor ASAP.
There is often a high demand for the course and each course tends to
fill up quickly. Enrollment is not
complete until payment is made in full.
Enrollment is done on a first come, first served basis. 6.
Do you have to have your permit or license? No. Again, in the state of TN, you can legally
take Driver’s Ed at the age of 14.
7.
Do you get high school course credit? Yes. Students
who successfully complete the course will receive ˝ course credit towards
their Williamson County diploma. Speak
with your counselor for more details. 8.
How long is the course? The State of Tennessee requires that each student
complete 30 hours of classroom instruction, plus six (6) hours of field
driving experience. Exactly how this
is managed is up to the individual driving instructor. 9.
When do you get to drive in the car? Again, it is up to the individual instructor. Usually, the students will take the 30
hours of classroom instruction first and the six (6) hours of driving are
scheduled afterword. Some students may
drive all in one day or their driving times will be scheduled over several
days. Also, it is important to note that due to certain
time restrictions (like having to drive after the school day) some students
will not get to the driving portion of the class for several weeks after the
classroom portion. Parents should be
aware of this when enrolling their student in the course. Driving times are scheduled according to the instructor’s availability and time constraints. 10. What if you have a
scheduling conflict during the dates the course is offered? It is best and strongly advised to plan to take the
course, especially the classroom portion, when you are free from prior
commitments as it is very difficult to get hours made up with the
instructor. However, things happen and
it is appropriate to make every effort to communicate with the instructor
teaching the course. 11. If I take this course,
do I still have to take the driving test to get my license. Yes, courses offered through Williamson County
Schools are not offered in conjunction with the TN Dept of Safety. You will still have to schedule and take
your road test with TDOS. You can contact them by phone or online at http://www.tnanytime.org/dlappts/ 12. Who do you contact with
questions or concerns? Since there are three instructors here at FHS, it is
best to speak with the instructor who is teaching the next available course
and email is often the best method for contacting the instructor. This information can be found by scrolling
back up. |
