Research Paper

Fairy Tale Author or Illustrator

English I, Honors

Most of us grow up having stories told to us.  Those stories come in many varieties:  bedtime stories read again and again from a favorite book, tales from family traditions, fairy tales told by memory while in a grandparent’s lap, Disney videotapes that keep you occupied, or perhaps just imagined tales exchanged with siblings.

Whether we realize it or not, the power of stories is great.  Stories become a part of who we are and who we will become.  Tales told to us in our childhood are meant to entertain us as well as tell us about the world in which we live.  In essence, stories are part of the driving force in our lives.  We are going to be spending a great deal of time exploring stories in depth.  In particular, we are going to dig deep into some of the stories of our childhood and see if we can find some of the didactic, historical, enlightening, and dark elements hidden beneath the entertainment value of fairy tales.

In the beginning of this study, each student will be researching an author or illustrator that has been influential in the world of imagination.  While we may not study each author or illustrator together in class, we will be getting our feet wet in the world of the storytellers.
