Eighth Grade READ 180  

Students’ third nine weeks grade will be based on evidence they are able to do the following:

1.  Select and write an appropriate summary statement based upon a text

2.  Identify and use multiple-meaning words in context

3.  Identify and use correct verb tense

4.  Identify and use commas correctly

5.  State a point of view and support it using text

6.  Identify the correct use of adverbs, prepositions, interjections, and conjunctions

7.  Make inferences from selected texts

8.  Read and use information from a map

9.  Plan and write a personal narrative in first person point of view

10.  Identify examples of similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, personification, and hyperbole

11.  Identify examples of sound devices such as rhyme, alliteration, assonance, slant rhyme, repetition, and internal rhyme

12.  Identify examples of bias and stereotyping

13.  Identify levels of reliability of resources such as eyewitness account, newspaper account, tabloids, and Internet sources

14.  Identify the correct use of quotation marks and colons

15.  Recognize and use appropriate vocabulary (i.e. allusion, antecedent, bias, composition structure, cross-reference, derivation, gerund/gerund phrase, infer from unstated assumptions, logic (inductive/deductive reasoning), participial phrase/participle, reliability, shades of meaning, synthesize/analyze)


 

Students’ second nine weeks grade will be based on evidence they are able to do the following ( #14-21 are in constant reinforcement & are carried over from the first nine-weeks):

1.  Replace unknown words with synonyms or antonyms

2.  Recognize first person point of view

3.  Identify plot, character, & setting of a story

4.  Understand the differences among genres

5.  Recognize cause and effect relationships in a passage

6.  Recognize implied themes

7.  Identify how an author reveals character traits

8.  Identify foreshadowing

9.  Select an appropriate thesis statement

10.  Identify the correct use of commas

11.  Identify the correct use of nouns, pronouns, verbs, and adjectives

12.  Identify sentences that do not fit the flow of a paragraph

13.  Choose the supporting sentence that best fits the flow of a paragraph

14.  Form questions while reading to help in understanding the text being read.

15.  Identify an author’s audience and purpose (i.e. to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to share emotions)

16.  Recognize and use appropriate vocabulary (i.e. assumption/assume, clarify, documentary, expository writing, expression, fluency, generalization, inconsistency, literary elements, projection, prose, revision, sentence structure, stereotype, viewpoint)

17.  Use dictionaries, thesauruses, and electronic sources to identify meanings of new words.

18.  Complete a graphic organizer

19.  Integrate all steps of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing).

20.  Identify correctly and incorrectly spelled words.

21.  Use context clues (reading around the word) to determine or predict meaning of unfamiliar words.

 


 

Students’ first nine weeks grade will be based on evidence they are able to do the following:

  1. Find the main idea and details of a passage.
  2. Form questions while reading to help in understanding the text being read.
  3. Identify an author’s audience and purpose (i.e. to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to share emotions)
  4. Determine sequence of events in a story/passage. Re-arrange written work in a logical order.
  5. Find information using timelines, graphs, headings, and subheadings within a reading.
  6. Identify appropriate synonyms and antonyms.
  7. Identify root words and affixes (prefixes & suffixes) to understand meaning of new words.
  8. Use context clues (reading around the word) to determine or predict meaning of unfamiliar words.
  9. Use dictionaries, thesauruses, and electronic sources to identify meanings of new words.
  10. Complete a graphic organizer (i.e. clustering, listing, mapping, and webbing)
  11. Write a well-organized paragraph(s)

·         Choose the supporting sentence that best fits the flow of ideas in a paragraph

·         Select/write an appropriate concluding sentence to a paragraph.

  1. Select the best way to combine sentences by using transitional words within writing.
  2. Select the most appropriate way to correct a run-on sentence.
  3. Identify correct subject/verb agreement.
  4. Integrate all steps of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing).
  5. Identify correctly and incorrectly spelled words.
  6. Recognize and use appropriate vocabulary while reading and writing. (i.e. analyze, compare, contrast, critique, define, describe, discuss, evaluate, explain, illustrate, interpret, justify, persuade, respond, state, summarize, trace)

          (these may differ slightly according to grade level)
