First Quarter Learning Targets

Sixth Grade Music

 

1.       All students will follow school-wide and county-wide rules as shown in the agenda.

2.       Students will be graded on both the content learned (80%) and responsibility (20%).

·         Content is considered to be graded assessments for state standards.

·         Responsibility may be considered to be such items as  bringing needed materials to class, getting to class on time, and taking care of school materials such as guitars and keyboards.

3.       Students must bring planners to class as well as using them as passes when in the hall during class time.

4.       Infraction of behavioral  issues will be addressed by the “Positive Behavior Support” system in which a student will receive “checks” for noncompliance.

 

Grades in sixth grade music class will be based upon the following:

  • RHYTHM;  Students will demonstrate knowledge of basic whole number notes and rests both by written example and performance by clapping or tapping in time signatures in which the bottom number is 4.
  • ADVANCED RHYTHM: In addition to the above, advanced students will be able to demonstrate eighth notes and rests and dotted quarters in time signatures where the bottom number is 4, 8, or 2.
  • NOTE READING: Students will demonstrate knowledge of letter and solfege(do, re, mi in the key of C) note names by written and sung examples in the treble clef.   The student will be able to use the correct Kodaly-Curwen hand sign when singing these examples and be able to improvise short melodies using solfege.
  • ADVANCED NOTE READING: Students will also demonstrate the above reading knowledge in the bass clef.
  • SINGING: The student will demonstrate correct posture and breathing while singing appropriate folk, patriotic, and seasonal songs.
  • SCALES: The student will demonstrate the do-pentatonic and major scales by singing.
  • HARMONY: The student will be able to sing the tonic, dominant, dominant seventh, and subdominant chords.
  • INSTRUMENT FAMILIES: The student will identify by written example to which family an instrument belongs and why.
  • VOCABULARY: time signature, bar line, double bar line, measure, repeat sign, accent, staff, treble clef sign, (bass clef sign), solfege, posture, pentatonic, major, tonic, dominant, subdominant, woodwind, reed, double reed, brass, percussion, string, keyboard

 

Seventh Grade Music

1.       All students will follow school-wide and county-wide rules as shown in the agenda.

2.       Students will be graded on both the content learned (80%) and responsibility (20%).

·         Content is considered to be graded assessments for state standards.

·         Responsibility may be considered to be such items as  bringing needed materials to class, getting to class on time, and taking care of school materials such as guitars and keyboards.

Music grades for seventh grade students will be based on the following:

  • RHYTHM: Students will demonstrate a knowledge of basic whole number notes and rests as well as eighth, sixteenth, and dotted notes in time signatures with the bottom number of 4, 8, and 2 by written example and by performance (clapping or tapping).
  • NOTE READING: Students will demonstrate a knowledge of letter and solfege (do, re, mi) note names in the treble clef by singing with Kodaly-Curwen hand signs and written example. Students will demonstrate knowledge of bass clef letter names by written example.
  • The student will demonstrate knowledge of half and whole steps, sharps and flats, by written example and playing on a keyboard.
  • The student will demonstrate the pentatonic and major scales by singing.
  • The student will demonstrate correct posture and breathing when singing.
  • HARMONY: The student will demonstrate knowledge of the tonic, dominant, subdominant, and dominant chords by singing.  The student will demonstrate the tonic and dominant chords by performing its shell on a keyboard.
  • KEYBOARD: The student will perform one or more simple melodies on a keyboard using proper techniques and reading simple notation. (Advanced) The student will accompany these melodies using the shell of the tonic and dominant chords.
  • VOCABULARY: time signature, bar line, double bar, measure, repeat sign, accent, ,staff, treble clef, bass clef, half step, whole step, sharp, flat, natural, solfege, pentatonic, major, retrograde.

 

Eighth Grade Music Class

Eighth grade students’ grades will be based on the following:

  • RHYTHM: Students will demonstrate  a knowledge of complex  as well as basic rhythms including whole number notes and rests, dotted notes, eight and sixteenth notes in time signatures with the bottom number of 4, 8, and 2 and syncopated rhythms by written example and performance (clapping or tapping).
  • NOTE READING: Students will demonstrate a knowledge of letter and solfege (do, re, mi) names in the treble clef by written example and by singing with Kodaly-Curwen hand signs.
  • SINGING: The student will demonstrate correct posture and breathing while singing.
  • SCALES: The student will demonstrate pentatonic, major, natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor scales by singing.  The student will demonstrate knowledge of half steps, whole steps, sharps, and flats by written example and by performance on the guitar.
  • GUITAR: The student will perform simple melodies and chords on the guitar using proper technique and reading simple notation.
