Field Day finally arrives!

Field Day is enjoyed by everyone at FMS!  Shown above are some of the sixth graders playing flag football.  Each homeroom competed in a single elimination competition.   Students had many choices for activities during this years field day, including jousting, big slide/obstacle course, 5O yard dash, and softball throw and soccer.   Of course many students took part in the dunk throw seen at right.  More photos coming soon!
Parent orientation was held on Thursday night at 6 PM.  Parents rotated through four sessions:  The administrators, the teachers, the PTO and Activities.  Parents seemed quite pleased with the night and many commented on how organized it was.  The evening was organized by Mrs Sissy Brinkley, Counselor. Beta club students helped supervise and provide activities for students in the gym.

Many thanks go out to the PTO for sponsoring Fairview Middle’s last Literacy Field Trip of forty students to Books a Million.  The PTO donated $5.00 to each student who posted three online book reports and handed in a weekly reading log each week for a term of eight weeks.  The bookstore manager, also gave a 20 percent discount on each book sold, so many of the students purchased stacks of books to read over the summer.

Tracy Vaughn’s , Barbara Hall’s, and Pat Gipson’s sixth grade social studies classes have been and are working on various projects.  These projects include a World History Timeline where the students are to choose a specific number of historical events – dating from 50,000 B.C. to present – and put those events in order on a timeline.  The students are then to draw pictures, use clip art, or internet pictures to illustrate the events. The students have also been working on Newspaper Scavenger Hunts.  The students are given a set of 4 specific objects to find – relating to Social Studies and/or Geography.  Using a newspaper, the students are to find pictures or words that illustrate or describe the objects.

Barbara Hall’s and Lisa Kennedy’s sixth grade classes are doing an author studies.  Barbara Hall’s classes made “match box” author studies during which they researched their favorite author, finding biographical information as well as stylistic elements of the author.  In addition, the students completed a “suitcase” activity as a send-off to the seventh grade in which the students wrote about the sixth grade experience:  goals achieved, what was learned, most humorous experience, and activites the students enjoyed.

Elizabeth Reid’s sixth grade science students are studying plate techtonics.  They are learning the three kinds of plate boundaries, the relationship between the plates and continental drift, and how convection currents account for plate movement.  In addition, they will study the origins of volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountains.

Melinda Easterling’s math students in sixth grade are problem solving-using the theme of the Olympics.  They are using math concepts learned this year to make charts and graphs, and to measure such things as distances from the current Olympics site to former Olympics sites.
