The Curriculum at
Fairview Middle
Sixth
Grade
The sixth grade team
takes great pride in
its academic program
and in its ability
to work with
adolescents on a
daily basis. The
curriculum is based
on the Tennessee
Comprehensive
Curriculum Guide.
Each area uses the
textbook plus a
variety of
supplemental
materials to master
these skills.
Language Arts
Students study
reading, spelling,
grammar, and writing
skills in Language
Arts. Students use
the basal readers to
insure that Terra
Nova objectives are
met in the reading
program. Workbooks
and other writing
activities insure
that students
practice for
mastering on the
skills they're
learning. Students
are regularly taken
to the library, and
a love for reading.
It's encouraged
through a variety of
literature including
fiction, biography,
mystery,
non-fiction, poetry,
fantasy, and
science-fiction. The
students also read
novels and do novel
activities and
projects. Students
are encouraged to
read Accelerated
Reader books and
take Accelerated
Reader tests along
with it.
Social
Studies
The history of
civilization is
traced from Early
Civilizations
through World War
II. The curriculum
includes all the
continents in the
Eastern hemisphere.
Textbooks are
supplemented with
maps, globes,
cassettes, and
videos. Student
reports and small
research papers are
done through
team-teaching
efforts. The subject
matters is
researched in the
social studies
class, while the
format and grammar
are done in language
arts. Students also
do projects for each
chapter that
illustrates what the
students have
learned during the
chapter.
Seventh
Grade
The seventh grade
teachers try to
develop the students
both academically
and socially.
Seventh grade is a
time when students
become much more
active in many areas
such as
cheerleading,
basketball,
volleyball,
football, and
wrestling. The
seventh grade
teachers want each
student to enjoy
school as much as
possible while
developing strong
academic skills.
The seventh grade is
divided into two
teams. Each team is
responsible for
language arts,
social studies,
math, and science.
Seventh grade
students also
receive classes in
Related Arts and
participate in a
focus time in which
the teacher
concentrates on an
area in which the
student may need
extra help or
additional
challenges.
Seventh grade
students are
rewarded in many
ways to
encourage outstanding
achievement,
behavior, and
attendance. For
achievement,
students are
rewarded with a
recognition from
France, a local
business, and the
school. For
attendance,
the students will
receive school
awards. The seventh
grade students also
participate in the
county spelling bee
and geography bee.
Eighth Grade
The eighth grade
teachers strive to
prepare students to
meet the challenges
of high school. The
overall curriculum
activities serve as
a transition from a
more elementary
approach to learning
to a more subject
oriented approach to
learning that will
be encountered in
high school.
The eighth grade
curriculum offers
high school credit
Algebra I, Physical
Science, and Spanish
I. The regular
eighth grade
curriculum includes
Algebra I, volume I;
American history;
science; language
arts; and reading.
Special education
students are
mainstreamed into
the regular program
when appropriate.
As well as
participating in all
other reward,
motivational, and
honor programs of
the school, eighth
graders participate
in the Presidential
Academic Achievement
awards program. This
programs honors
students with
exceptional seventh
grade stanines and
