English II A

Literature and Logic

  • Draw inferences from reading selections.

  • Interpret an author's point of view.

  • Identify the simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, alliteration, or personification in a given portion of a poem.

  • Select the allusion in a given passage.

  • Identify the rhyme scheme and meter within a poem, as well as identify the basic tone and meaning of a poem.

  • Identify elements of a plot within a text: setting, character, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action,.

  • Identify the varying techniques that authors use to reveal character.

  • Define a symbol and indentify symbols in literary and media works.

  • Identify the three types of irony within text: verbal, situational, dramatic.

Media and Communication

  • Select the type of conflict in a work.

Language and Writing

  • Select the correct word for the sense of the sentence.

  • Practice pronoun/antecedent agreement with intervening elements.

Writing

  • Apply basic rules of punctuation to his/her own writing.

  • Use a variety of correct sentence structures for effect.

  • Demonstrate confidence in using the Tennessee Writing Assessment Rubric while evaluating one's own writing and the writing of others.

  • Choose the transitional device that appropriately connects sentences or paragraphs within a writing sample.

Logic/Literature

  • Indentify the author's purpose and style in various passages through drawing conclusions and making inferences from various parts of these passages.

  • Indentify the point of view within a passage.

  • Identify the theme of a passage by analyzing characterization, plot, setting, point of view, and conflict.

  • Ascertain the difference between fact and opinion within a passage.

  • Identify persuasive techniques in literature.

  • Define and identify symbolism in reading selections.

Language

  • Correct sentence fragments and run-on sentences.

  • Demonstrate proofreading ability through identification of errors in spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

Writing/Communication/Research

  • Summarize and paraphrase a passage, thus demonstrating the knowledge of the difference between significant details and main details within a passage.

  • Synthesize information from multiple sources in order to extend ideas showing how the ideas relate to a specific situation.

  • Create a well-defined thesis statement.

  •  Document research using MLA format on a Works Cited page.

  • Practice parenthetical citations in MLA format.

  • Draw an inference and infer mood from a non-print medium.

  • Consider the treatment of a particular subject or event in two or more media.

  • Identify the organizational structure of an informational or technical text.

  • Use correct writing process including an introduction with hook, body paragraphs with topic sentences, direct quotations.

  • Evaluate and revise writing to focus on purpose, organization, development, transitions, unity, and audience awareness.
