1st Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. TSW identify and explain the major types of conflict within a text (e.g. man v. man, man v. nature, man v. self).
  2. TSW identify poetic elements within poems: personification, onomatopoeia, allusion alliteration, irony, simile, metaphor.
  3. TSW define theme and identify examples of theme.
  4. TSW discern and explain the main idea of a short reading passage.
  5. TSW define and apply the three types of point of view to short reading selections.
  6. TSW identify the three types of irony within text: dramatic, verbal, and situational.
  7. TSW define and identify the eight parts of speech.
  8. TSW apply basic rules of punctuation (semicolon, comma, end punctuation, quotation marks) to his/her own writing.
  9. TSW correctly punctuate dialogue.
  10. TSW practice pronoun/antecedent agreement with intervening elements (pronoun following “than”).
  11. TSW define and identify pronoun case.
  12. TSW use the comparative/superlative adjective forms correctly.
  13. TSW construct an organized five paragraph essay.
  14. TSW support thesis statements using evidence from literature, real life, or current events.
  15. TSW use activities to generate, focus, and organize ideas before writing.
  16. TSW compose a reflective essay.

2nd Trimester Essential Outcomes

  1. TSW identify persuasive techniques in literature (i.e. bandwagon, testimonial, etc.).
  2. TSW define and identify symbolism in reading selections.
  3. TSW select and logically defend an alternative title for a passage or work.
  4. TSW discern the purposes and main ideas of various texts.
  5. TSW discern an implied main idea from a short reading selection.
  6. TSW identify and fix a shift in verb tense, point of view, and tone.
  7. TSW use the correct homophone for the context of the sentence (your and you’re, their and there, etc.).
  8. TSW identify compound and compound-complex sentences.
  9. TSW identify at least two ways to combine sentences.
  10. TSW correct sentence fragments and run-on sentences.
  11. TSW appropriately sequence sentences within a paragraph.
  12. TSW identify and use transitional words in writing.
  13. TSW identify vivid words to strengthen a statement.
  14. TSW identify analogies.
  15. TSW create a manual of clearly written directions.
  16. TSW define and identify parallelism.
  17. TSW create a well-defined thesis statement.
  18. TSW document research using MLA format on a Works Cited page.
  19. TSW distinguish between a paraphrase and a direct quote.
